I bought Knight of Thistle and it arrived yesterday. It really looks the business with very fine detail. I don't have an 00 gauge layout at home only TT120, so will have to wait until Tuesday to run it at my local railway club. Now I have to find ERA 3 LNER carriages.

Just the perfect models for Hornby! Just the right amount of detail, with no chance of fragile bits falling off and being lost on your tracks. If there is one gripe, it will be the fire box flicker! But I’m sure the use of a different and deprogramed sound decoder, this could be made to work with the sound of the coal being shovelled. I’d give it 48, if you have to give scores! Well done TMC for offering these locos at such great prices!

You may be delighted to know that on the back of this excellent review I purchased the 'Doncaster' version and this is my first loco purchase since my return to model railwaying after a 40+ year tea brake. Thank you. Now, all I have to do is complete the baseboard, lay the track, add the scenery...... (voice fades into distance)

The Bargains certainly won me over :D i have always planned getting Doncaster, and love a1's in general. ive been aiming to get alot of Gresley a1's, a3's and a4's in their LNER liverys and then weathering by cool chaps. and when i saw doncaster 50% off i was like in the comments, "WHAT! YES PLEASE!!" which was funny. it's such a good model and i can't wait for it to arrive!

What fabulous model locomotives. The older model was more than acceptable, until the tooling started to get a little tired and you would get the occasional warped running board etc. But this new version has definately shown Hornby is back in the game. I probably couldnt afford the full rrp at the moment, but for a newly tooled, full fat version for the price of a railroad version. I couldnt pass that up. So Doncaster is already ordered. 🤣 Thankyou for sharing this wonderful locomotive at a bargain price with us.

Such a beautiful model, a classic LNER livery, very well made by Hornby. They can do a top line passenger locomotive very well. Nice numbers on the cab side too. Pity I do grotty E/E WR steam freight locos, really... lol

I have Doncaster in my collection I considered it worth it at the normal retailer price. At the price that TMC has these at, snap one up while the deal lasts.

Very attractive locomotive. However, as I said on the Monday Club, I’m Mr Southern Steam!! My layout is one representing Dad’s Army, the station being Walmington-on-Sea.

Minor query - If you close-couple the tender, does the surplus drawbar chafe aganst the wiring loom from the white plug?

One of the reason why the two locomotives are different is that they were build in different workshops one in Glashow and the other one at Doncaster. I would like The Knight of the Thistle, Martin. (Thailand)🐒🐒🐒

Check the wheels as they are not molded very well with gaps between the spoke edge and metal rims

I have both of the older Doncaster - BR and LNER colours - use them as display in my office along with Yorkshire and Doncaster Rovers. Much prefer Diesel to kettles

Gordon is definitely an A1. In one of the books he welcomes his only surviving brother - 4472 (with double tender because the book was published in 1969) on a visit to the isle of Sodor. Even as a kid I could never figure out why he had rectangular buffers though!

The real world reason is Audrey gave the original illustrator pictures of his model of Gordon which was a Princess modded to look like an A1. In universe the reason is Gordon was rebuilt by Stainer at some point which explains why he looks different from the rest of his class.

Sadly just returned my second loco for a refund. Both with obvious manufacturing faults. Hornby really need to look at their quality control.
