Saw a fleet break away during high river once. Always nice to see towboats coming out of the woodworks to get the barges back in control and in the fleet.

I never experienced a total bust up, but I have when a pilot hit the Chain of Rocks there and broke the break coupling, I was glad for I prayed all the time when I worked out there...and not only it happened at the break coupling but it was crew change, so everyone was up and we had it back together in 45 minutes....and waited for the Coast Guard to show up which took them two hours....

This is why Rhinebarges and self propelling riverships must have 3 anchors each. Two at the bow and one at the aft. The anchors have to have a certain minimum weight, related to the size and weight of the vessel.. Some regulations on the Rhine river are more or less ridiculous but this is not one of them.

Henk Eerkes The Rhine River do not tow the number of barges as on the American Rivers and manned to drop the snchors

After they get all of them corraled into a tow . The next step is organization of the barges where they are to go and which gets dropped off first. It will be a large job but our experenced river crews know all about how to do the job.

not true. as a deckhand you carry no navigable responsibilities. the captain ran the boat in high water into a bridge. accident yes. avoidable probably.

@riverider722 Kind of a harsh the landlubber thing. It's by choice you go out there and do what you do. Us landlubber's didn't get in your way or cause your dilema, shi...stuff happens, even with the best intentions. Harley riding sounds like you arn't too against being on solid ground.... then I suppose everybody's a 'cager'. Its either you, or the whole world friend.....
