Thank you for making these videos! I am watching them from the south African countryside, where I am unable to physically attend the type of drawing classes I am hungry for. But videos like yours open my world.

Really do appreciate getting some thoughtfully organized synopsis of what curriculum we would study if attending an accademia di belle arti

Thank you so much! I’ve been a self taught artist for pretty much my whole life, and recently have been more interested in the classical icons of art, and I always loved Bargue’s style but could never name who was behind them. So again, thank you, master teacher! I will definitely be getting my hands on all of his books!

Am I right in thinking that you don't want us to first block in those smaller shape shapes as flat values with hard edges? To first organise their structure and then soften the edges and turn the form? I understand that there is a more variety of values in the major shadow shape because of ambient light, but do I not maintain that procedure to tackle a more complex plate?

Hi Stephen, Michelangelo was on hand at the unearthing of the Laocoön, not the Belvedere Torso.

Thanks so much, Stepehen. Do you think it would be useful to draw these, using comparative measurements, or is the method exclusively designed for sight size reproduction?

Comparative measurements would also be useful.

An excellent video (as always), but the Belvedere Torso is not Classical Greek (480-323 B.C.), it's Hellenistic (which is later-and better, in my opinion). The Torso was first recorded in a Roman collection in 1433, and Michelangelo was born in 1475. That stated, all Hellenistic sculptures known in Michelangelo's first Roman period were a huge influence on him, just as Stephen says.

Good catch, Michael- I did have a feeling there was some factual inaccuracy in the time lines there.

Very clear teaching again, im going to buy your full online lessons. Thanks. Oh also, i want to ask two questions. - At what size we should copy these plates? (Paper size)** - How much approx. time one should spend for a single plate like this or a cast portrait?
@stephenbaumanartwork

Good question- you should try to copy them at the same size as the reproduction that you have.

@@stephenbaumanartwork I have the pdf version on my laptop. I try to copy them from the laptop screen.. so they are kinda small in contrary to original plates i guess.. thanks!
