Malay Town was a suburb of the old city of Rabaul which was home to four members of the Barike Band; and one of them is John Wong. John wrote "The "Poor Side Of Town" after he was fed up with the local media and members of the public who often paint his beloved Malay Town in a negative picture. The song is taken from Barike's 3rd album titled "I PAIA" which was recorded in 1984 at the original Pacific Gold Studios in Rabaul.
This was recorded using a very basic Tascam 4-Track reel-to-reel ¼ inch analogue recorder, mixing down through a 4-channel mixer with basic on-board effects and equalization to a ¼ inch 2-track tascam stereo reel-to-reel master recorder.,"Sound Engineer Greg C Seeto would do many takes and mix-bounce these to two-track, back to 4-track and continue overdubs until satisfied. Most of the tracks at the time were recorded raw [no fx and compression, etc.] Because he was a musician, the rest of the tricks and good output of the final production of those early recordings was a result of his creative imaginations.
