Cordillera - Stands at an elevation of more than 1,800 meters above sea level, this huge statue of the Philippine eagle located in the town of Barlig is a beacon of hope for forest conservation, wildlife preservation, and cultural integrity promotion of town's lush rainforests.
It can be recalled that this mountainous spot is where a juvenile Philippine eagle was released back in 2005. The same spot was also the location of the Philippine Monkey-Eagle, locally known as Lawi as proven by the late Barangay Chairman of Lias, Silangan, Mr. Romeo Cofin.
Cofin said that around 50 eagles were previously hunted before leading to zero sightings today. But some locals in the area said they sometimes hear eagles chirping at nighttime, an indication that some eagles are still existing in the area.
The statue of the Philippine Eagle aims to spark initiative of the local government of Barlig to protect the forest as sanctuary of this critically endangered species of eagle. www.wowcordill...
