The Ford VV carb will be fine with a clean and a new diaphragm kit. They were not as bad as many make out - I was fixing them 30-40 years ago.
@taunus1990

I agree. The VV gives good fuel economy if working perfectly. But on the other hand, a Weber is simpler and parts are easier to find. Getting gaskets for a VV will not be a problem, but the big vacuum diafragram is a lot harder to find these days.

Josh, that head lying on the floor in the “barn” will have the bent valves at a guess (I’m also guessing you brought it back so you can check) the head on the engine will have straight valves as it will be a replacement so that’s the head worth renovating. Just for the record I de seized many an engine using a lump hammer and 3x2 back in the day and I’m surprised you didn’t attempt it before pulling the lump out 😀👍

Put some new valve guide seals on the guides. For this you need to take out the valves, obviously. But it then gives you the perfect opportunity to check for bent valves (put then in a drill. Let the drill spin the valve and then you can see if it is out of wack or still true. When putting them back in you can inspect the seats and maybe lap those valves in for a perfect seal. IMO the cylinder head is the heart of an engine. The more attention you give it to make it perfect, the better the engine will run once it's back together.

I would beforehand do 2 things 1. remove the cam oil feed pipe and retaining bolts and put them somewhere very safe 2. clean the combustion chambers and check for any visible cracks from memory I am sure pinto's used to crack between the valves when the engine has been frozen highly likely given the circumstances oh and 3. the sump is full of water 😉🤣

I rekon go full restoration on that engine now the block is salvageable, you have come this far... The love has set in...Blow it apart, take it to an automotive machine shop to hone the bores, skim the head, hone the crank, new pistons and rings (find manuaul on the dark art of piston ring gapping 😂) - new heads and all the trimmings! Do full resto and metal seal on car, love it, build a dry shed for it, start it once a week for the next 20 years, take it to meets, become a Ford guy and go on honey moon in it - you know you want to 😁🤩 Lol, I restored and then years later turbo charged a Mk1 Nissan Almera I found at the back of a scrap yard with a broken gear box and a blown head gasket. Its a completely senseless addiction. Currently parked after cylinder 1's tiny crack that would huff a little water vapour on start up for years but held together is now fully gone 😢 Full rebuild time 😊

Booh! Boooooohhhh!!! The 1.6 feels much more lively. 2.0 have higher stroke, so good low torque, but feels dead in high rpm. The 1.6 is the opposite. A bit less low down torque, but feels more lively in the higher rpm... I have driven Cortina and Sierra with 1.6 and 2.0 with Weber 32/36 carb on, allways preferred the 1.6. Also better fuel economy with a 1.6. The 1.6 is underrated and the 2.0 overrated. Same with the gearboxes. Everyone yelling "put a Sierra 5 speed in youre Cortina!" Those 5 speed boxes dont shift as smooth as the 4 speed. A 4 speed shifts with a touch of youre pink. The 5 speeds all feel so cluttered.

The bottom end id check over as you say, with it been sitting for that long, plus if its been stolen in the past, god knows what ride its had. See if there are some old school yards about, that have these in still, you may need to travel though, so you can get the bits and pieces. You maybe lucky you may find one that age still in a yard. Look in fast ford mags etc. As i am sure there was a sierra breaker in a mag i read some year ago, and the owners clubs.

On a base model 1.6 it's most likely just a pocket in the dash, might be a clock and pocket if it's a gl. The cam belt not being tight is not an issue as pinto is a non interference engine, meaning you can snap the belt and just bung a new one on it'll run fine, the reason the chap didn't get it running is likely because the timing is out. I'm 10 mins into the vid and will keep watching and point anything else out I can to help

As for the head and cam just clean it up a best you can and reuse. I wouldn't bother replacing anything other than the gaskets unless your plan is to keep the thing, it's gonna smoke like a bus when it run do the the rings beinh stuck in the ring lands anyways so that engine will need rebuilding. Even with a pitted cam it'll run, use some high zinc oil and it'll be fine.
