Loads of good info there Richard, I was on a barn fire last week and there was a Barn Owl quartering in the farmers field as we were working. I was distracted to say the least!!😄 I 've had a lot of success with tying a nice looking post on to an existing fence line to try and pinpoint them onto a certain spot. Its surprising how they tend to go for the taller post. Looking forward to the next one , All the best Si 👍

Thanks mate, Nightmare on the Barn Fire! I bet it was such a distraction, hopefully nobody was hurt or the Barn Owl is now not homeless:-( I watched your videos on the Barneys and the Posts, some really good tips there too. Cheers mate, reducing my Vlogs now as weekly is getting too much, still got lots of projects now that the weather is hopefully getting a bit better. All your latest stuff mate is great and I can see the rewards are coming thick and fast! Good on you, totally deserved. All the best R 👍

Another great informative vlog Richard. Anyone who wants to succeed in getting great images &/or video of Barn Owls needs to put in the time & effort. As you know I did a similar project to yours throughout the winter, & I learnt so much just by going out with binoculars & concealing myself away to observe their behaviour & learn their patterns. It really does pay off to do stuff like this, so good on you for putting out a vlog like this, a great watch & I thoroughly enjoyed it.

@@RichardBirchett certainly are - I've been fortunate to have found 3 or 4 locations within a few miles of home over the last few years, but this latest one is a 10 minute stroll from my front door - a few weeks back I actually had one in the field that backs on to our garden and am now thinking it was probably the same one I've been watching since. Unfortunately no luck with the farmer as yet - a shame because the margin that the owl tends to hunt down most of the time is on the far side of the field from which is too far off for any photos - either way it's great just to watch it hunt. Just watched part 2 and picked up some more useful tips - particularly about them hunting in to the wind, which makes sense, but never really thought about before!

@RICHARD BIRCHETT , when you say the field has been 'seeded', is that to provide grain for the voles to feed on and therefore increase their numbers OR is it a seed to encourage certain grass/plants to grow? Apologies if you explained this and I simply missed it but I'm wondering what chance I stand of trying to improve the habitat somewhere.
@RichardBirchett
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Phil, no problem the farmer sowed a wild bird seed mix recommended by the RSPB for encouraging overwintering bird flocks to use on the 14 acres of fields. It was funded by a scheme called the Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) paid for by natural England to help the birds through the winter. I will find out the mix from the farmer if needed. Really works, thousands of linnets and other finches and species use the fields, amazing results! Helping voles and the owls and other birds of prey. R 👍
