Cleveland had so many great personalities like Clay Conroy (Woodrow the Woodsman), Ron Penfound (Captain Penny), Earl Keyes(Mr. Jingaling), and of course, Linn Sheldon (Barnaby), it's a shame those guys are no longer with us. The only great ones that are still with us (as far as I know) are Bob "Hoolihan"Wells, Big Chuck Schodowski, Lil John Rinaldi, Marty Sullivan "Superhost" and Ray Stawiarski "Franz the Toymaker".

I am correcting myself, because it turns out it was an Urban Legend that Captain Penny committed suicide! I have been searching online and found that he died of lung cancer! There is a nice write up about him in Wikipedia. So it turns out there have been NO SUICIDES to mar our childhood memories!

My generation grew up watching "Barnaby" and feel blessed that Linn was born in my hometown and attended school with my dad. I taped his final show and freely admit the tears flowed the day I watched it. Even now some years later, my eyes still water while watching this brief clip. Linn honored me by autographing my copy of "Barnaby and Me." Great memories of childhood return when I hear the theme music!

Thank you so much. This has to be one of the saddest things I have ever seen in my entire life. He had such a big heart. There is a nice write up in the Plain Dealer about him, and the theme, and how it touched so many people who watched it. This man had a horrible childhood, and gave up drinking in 1974, then helped others with the problem. I cried like a baby reading the story. I tried to post the link, but ?KZitem won't allow it.

No, he was not a "drunk". He was freed from alcohol abuse in the early 70's, and went on to help others defeat the problem of being alcoholic. Please do not try to defame this wonderful man, because it won't work.

hellerc, Could you tell me where I might find that CD with the theme? Is it the original theme? The music that plays at the end always ripped my heart out. Whoever wrote that piece sure wrote some beautiful music. This was difficult to watch, as he choked up at the end. Thanks, conanconquer, for posting this.

I met Lynn Sheldon back in March of 1985 at Roserie Hall which was a AA type of treatment center. He was there to speak of his former ways and what AA had done for him. One of the first things he said was, "Forget the Barnaby image, because with alcahol, he wasn't the same nice guy we sow on TV. He went on to talk about his story and how AA helped him. Yes, he did do what he could to help others get off the booze. And YES, he sure is missed!

No, you are mistaken! Barnaby did not end his own life. You are thinking of Captain Penny; Ron Penfound, who did commit suicide. Linn Sheldon, Barnaby, led a full life, and died just a few years ago. He wrote his autobiography, "Barnaby and Me", in 1999 and I was able to meet him and get it signed by him. VERY sweet man!
