Local historians always try to make things sound enticing for people to listen to so that they take an interest in them. That's a fact of life. If something goes down in history, the whole Chinese whisper-like effect happens over time and the line between fact and fiction can get blurred. There's a case to be made in today's video for both fact and fiction.
I am of course referring to the local legend behind the Cat and the Man. According to the stories, this tale started as a fight between a knight riding horseback and a wild cat, somewhere around what is modern day Cathill Roundabout in Billingley. The fight continued until both combatants ended up killing each other in the porch of a church. Supposedly stained with red flecks of blood on certain stones, the church in question lies at the heart of one of the two villages in this parish.
Now, that's not all this place is famed for. Oh no. If you recall in the Adwick upon Dearne episode, the woodland area where a colliery once stood provided the villagers in this parish with work. There used to be a Hall, which no longer stands but leaves behind an impressive dovecote in it's grounds.
If all that's not enough, there's a fishery, a park and a lot of trees planted to commemorate various Royal occasions. Most of what I found here was filmed only by walking a short distance. It's main features are very concentrated into one area. I'll leave it up to you to judge what you think is fact about the legend by reading the stories clicking the link in the description. Hopefully what I have filmed here though is 100% fact.
Enjoy those facts (and the fiction if you like) in and around BARNBURGH.
