Great presentation of the birth of opera. My little contribution: in the Camerata de' Bardi, in Florence, there was also Vincenzo Galilei, musician and father of Galileo. The first public theatre in Venice was S. Cassiano Theatre, opened in 1637. Claudio Monteverdi introduced two "effects" for strings: the "pizzicato" and the "tremolo". Also Lully was born in Florence: his original name was Giovan Battista Lulli, and has a very interesting life: from a poor family in Florence to the Court of Louis XIV in France.

An excellent overview of the appropriately baroque story of baroque opera! Thoroughly enjoyable and well-presented as ever.

Just last week we went to the magic flute. Yes, opera is a special experience. And, I'm kind of a person who enjoys it even more with a certain background knowledge (history around the time of the composition, different musical motives in the opera). This video really helped to understand the backgrounds, so I can enjoy opera even more. Thank you

Please also do a video on opera during later periods after the baroque, such as the classical and romantic periods from the 19th and 20th century. Would love to see that, music from those eras are my absolute favourite. Thank you

Thanks again!! In visual art, Baroque sculpture (like Bernini’s David) is a revival of drama from the Hellenistic period (like The Dying Gaul), which reacted against emotional and physical stiffness.

That was absolutely fascinating! I'd never paid much attention to opera, and never really understood it. Now it all makes a lot more sense to me and I want to explore it more. Thank you!

Although I love Romantic operas like Puccini’s Tosca, Verdi’s Otello or Bizet’s Carmen, it is great to know the origins of where this amazing art from came from!

Great lecture of baroque opera! I really like Handel's and Rameau's operas. A. Scarlatti is another often overlooked awesome composer, but I know his cantatas and instrumental music rather than operas.

Monteverdi used choruses, duets and instrumental movements in his operas. There is a huge difference between his Orfeo and his last opera, Poppea.
