Barred Eagle Owls can be found in southern Myanmar, the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Singapore, Borneo, Sumatra & Java. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
The Barred Eagle Owl (BEO) is a very elusive species in Singapore. It used to be nearly impossible to find in mainland Singapore, but sightings have grown more common since a BEO parent feeding a juvenile (read: the first breeding) was discovered in 2018.
Even so, sightings in mainland Singapore are rare and brief, with less than 10 sightings every year and rarely over 2 hours long. Thus, many birders hear the alert, rush down to find it, and reach there only to be told by others that it's gone off and leave disappointed.
Today was different. The BEO was happily sleeping at Ulu Sembawang nature trail and many birders rushed to capture photos & videos of it. This time, they were not disappointed.
Do not be fooled by it's professor like appearance, BEOs are ferocious & opportunistic predators. Which means, in addition to killing and eating insects, rodents & birds, they have been photographed to attack & eat prey animals or similar or bigger size than them, such as Long Tailed Macaques (photo by Reno Wong, 2009). One BEO was even documented killing and eating a Changeable Hawk Eagle while both were kept in an aviary (König, C.; Weick, F. (2008). Owls of the World (2nd ed.). London: Christopher Helm.
