Thank you ONEILLOPS! I too have been researching barrel break in for my new 338 Lapua. Many people have many different ideas of break in, and different takes on whether it does any good or not. I concluded that if you do break it in, you are not losing anything. And, if it really does make a difference in the long term, then you have everything to gain. I have had it for at least a few weeks now, and after several additional weeks of exhaustive research while waiting for my rifle, I have settled on your method. Yesterday, I got all the tools, solvents and stuff needed to do this. I forgot to get a rifle vise, so I am now waiting for that. Then, on with the procedure. Great video quality.

This is a really contentious issue as made clear early in this vid. I did the 10 X 1, 5 X 2, 5 X 3 and finally 3 X 5 break in procedure. It was arduous but I’m happy with my choice. I enjoyed this clip and think there is a lot of good sense in it. I also sort of enjoy listening to a bloke who calls himself gunblue (some numbers after - might be 490). He rambles a lot but having worked in the firearms industry he is very knowledgeable and also makes a lot of sense. I suggest listen to as many peoples’ opinions on this subject then make your mind up on this procedure. You’ll know if you picked the right one for you as you’ll never have regrets down the road.

I respect this guy greatly. He admits freely that accuracy isn't affected whether or not a barrel is "broken in". If he thinks it fixes microburrs, then I say let him enjoy himself. As for me, if you can't provide data that proves the process accomplishes anything, then it's all just hocus-pocus. By the way, your opinion DOES NOT qualify as data. Before you argue that your voodoo accomplishes anything at all, PROVE IT...

Thank you for this good information. You are the reason that I bought the same equipment as you use :-) I just bought my first new hunting rifle, sako 85 bavarian .308w, and I try to clean according to your instructions. But I have a question to you, when I do the first 3-4 steps it's like it will not become clean, every time I scrub with powder solvent the dry patch is black like the first one. Is the point that I have to clean the bore till there is no black left, or? Hope for your advice.
@ONEILLOPS

when you are cleaning out the powder/primer residue with the mild solvent ie. hoppes 9, you can scrub all day with that bronze brush and follow up with a dirty patch... repeat the mild solvent treatment one time, then patch out until clean... then go into your heavy copper solvent ie. sweets 762.

Just a side note; something I have found effective is to use brake cleaner spray( non- chlorinated) to spray out the barrel with it detached from the stock. This will take out all the nasty cleaner and will also help dissolve the teflon is you are using coated bullets. It leaves no residue and make sure you do it in a well ventilated area. Clean and shiny barrel and will clean the brass brush. Don't use on plastic anything or wood stock. I welcome any input on this as I'm not the pro.

Truthfully, I have no idea whats going on if you have a 4" grouping @ 100yds. Why use strong, caustic chemicals? If you choose to "break in" a barrel use weak cleaners. Most barrel makers advise against these abusive procedures anyway. Ruger and Krieger are 2 who advise against because of overdoing it. Bartlein barrel maker advises against any break in for their lapped barrels.

LOL, 6 months of big boy reading has nothing to do with solvent usage, Hoppes 9 is very "weak" compared to sweets 7.62, (would you like to inform us all otherwise?)... you can leave Hoppes in your bore as a conditioner, or rust preventative after a cleaning, would you be willing to do that with 7.62?

Need to be much more careful yanking the cleaning rod back into the barrel. Having any part of transition between the rod and brush, jag, etc exit the muzzle requires careful re-entry into the barrel or you can and will damage the crown and then all you work breaking in is for not.

I'd like to see a picture of these "micro burrs", and tell me the barrel brand so I can stay away from them. A good quality barrel will need no burr removal and require no break-in. If you don't believe me, ask John Kreiger.
@ONEILLOPS
6 жыл бұрын
You can see them, just purchase a Bore scope, Why do you think custom barrel manufacturers "hand lap" barrels? To remove internal imperfections, tool marks, in this video I called them "micro burrs", same thing.
@davegrenier1160
6 жыл бұрын
All decent barrel makers do this as a matter of course in their manufacturing operation. Just watch any number of "visit to the factory" type videos and you will see them explaining this step in the process. (Usually done by machines, which are capable of greater precision and accomplishing a lapping procedure in a fraction of the time it takes a human to do the job. Yes, custom barrel makers "hand lap" their barrels. They do this either because they haven't invested in, or can't afford, the machinery, or they know the mystique of "hand-finishing" a bore allows them to charge a premium.) The fact is that sending a copper (that's what's in contact with the barrel, no matter what's inside the bullet) pill down a hardened steel barrel has no practical effect on the barrel until its wears it out, because a properly made barrel is already optimally dimensioned and finished when it leaves the factory. Any wear on it only causes it to depart from that optimum, meaning it becomes less accurate, not more. For instance, a major barrel maker explains that "break in" merely presents too much copper build-up in the throat. Just shooting a barrel smooths out the throat (which is cut after the bore is prepared), but while doing this not periodically cleaning the gun doesn't affect the accuracy, but does end up providing a more difficult cleaning (when cleaning is finally done). kzitem.info/news/bejne/lJpmk3qFfqJyqKw
@MrMooseSlayer
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Dave! There's no way a soft copper and lead slug will cut or form hardened steel. Tool marks IN THE CHAMBER would be indicative of sloppy reaming during manufacturing, and hand-lapping won't do anything to correct it. Any tool marks in the bore would be "in line" along the bore and have pretty much no bearing at all on accuracy.
@ONEILLOPS

I'm still not seeing your point. Don't break in your barrel if you don't think it works.
@toddb930
5 жыл бұрын
The micro burrs aren't there on a new high quality barrel. The burrs we are trying to burnish down are from the chambering process. This because the reamer is cutting across the rifling and leaving rough surface that the bullet goes over when firing a round.
