As Barry Humphries ages, Dame Edna becomes more and more real. In her own words, it's spoooky! One of the most endearing things about the character is that she's somehow able to convince others this larger-than-life character with lavender hair is real. I highly doubt many of the leading men she had on her shows over the years could have kissed her cheeks with such ease had they not been fully invested in the illusion. And she has never looked as truly gorgeous as she does now.

🇧🇷 Barry Humphries is a genius. It is amazing how he created a character so unique and original as " Dame Edna Everage".Do USA citizens- or others english language speakers- pronounce the initial letter " O" in the word " Opossum"? Because I only hear " possum"? If not, why? Why english language seems to be like a " lottery ": you NEVER know what is coming ( in the pronunciation's case) untill it comes. It is crazy. Honestly, this language should be much more simple. Why having letters in words if you will not use them? Pronounce them? Do you have or buy for you or your house things you don't use or are not necessary for you ? There is no reason to make a language that complicated. This is, with no doubts, a negative aspect. 🇧🇷

Opossum and possum are different words. They are not the same.

Why,it's because English is derived from Greek, Latin, German, French. English pronunciation does change over time but it's getting the vowels correct that must be difficult for ESL students. For instance take chaos. It's pronounced K/os in English. Spanish speakers say cows with a soft w for chaos. And..the ch at the beginning one thinks would be pronounced as in chips, or chicken. So you have to look at the etymology of the word to find out what sounds the vowels or letter combinations make. If a word is of German origin, let's say it's some of the words with silent letters like (igh or k). As in knight or night or light. It's a great pity we stopped teaching phonics. I'm sorry it frustrates you so, I can tell you want to be a good communicator in English. You don't have to learn every word but learn to decode the anomalies and identify a few groups of exceptions but looking to country of origin is the key to why the sound variations occur. And it's the key to why English has been so successful as well. Keep going 😊 we all learn new words every day and there is no shame in asking for clarification.

It doesn't really have anything to do with pronunciation. An "opossum" and a "possum" are two different types of animal - hence two different (albeit similar) names. A possum is a cute little native Aussie animal (which is why Edna calls people "possums"), whereas an opossum is native to North America and is more like a cross between a feral cat and a rabbid rat... 😅
