I saw Barry Richards play in India long after he had retired. He played in some veterans game. Even at that time he had not lost his Midas touch. It was all timing and no footwork. He played with his eyes like the other Richards did from the West Indies. One shot like the one he hit here at 7.36 is still in my eyes. At another time, Barry Richards picked a perfectly good length ball and effortlessly lofted it to the deep long on boundary for a six. What a magnificent player. I only saw him live once in a JPL match and I was late getting in while he clattered a few boundaries then as soon as I came in he was out hooking to deep square leg. I don't think people nowadays have any idea what it was like watching BAR and Greenidge opening the innings for Hampshire. I saw him make a few hundreds in the JPL because of course the TV cameras would bring the best out in him! My favourite story about him is how his parents came over to watch him play in a county match. His mum missed the plane so he scored a hundred in front of his dad on the first day. His mum made it the next day and with a couple of hours left on the last day he scored another hundred for her. He was technical perfection combined with awesome power - a kind of Tendulkar plus.

Bradman averaged 99.94 in his Test career. OK, I know this is a matter of opinion, but had Richards had a full Test career, I believe his average would have been 2nd only to Brabman - and people who never saw him play live and maybe doubt what I and others say about him - would have no choice but to acknowledge just how brilliant - and that's an understatement - he really was.

Something in the name Richards. They (Barry and Viv) seem to have amazing coordination and loads of time to hit the ball.

I would think 1970/71 would be Dennis Lilee's inital days. How quick was he back then? And how was the pitch? Looking at the footage, it didn't look quick both pitch and Lilee. How effortlessly Richards was playing the shots.

Looks like Lillee is not trying to bowl quick here he was timed @154.8kph in 76 after stress fractures and slowing down a lot I read in an article where Rod Marsh says Lillee was timed @98mph before his back injuries and I personally think he may have been have brenched 160kph

I never saw Richards play. I just saw his innings in 94-95 paying against Bradman's 11. The way he played at that age Impressed me a lot. We really missed these gems due to apartheid era.

Mandar Akre i also was at this game, Barry was over 50 and still struck the ball like a 20 year old, I remember four shots in particular that day, and they all told me that the legend that is Barry Richards was true. An amazing player, ranked by many as the best the world has never seen.

There are runs to be had at that level of cricket, but at First Class level what the bowling tends to do is grind at you by bowling specifically to its field. At 9:20 he's bowling with that guy at mid-off in mind. But, then, he's played it correctly, without spooning it to someone on the full. Next delivery shown he's rigged a shot to the off-side but he's found the mid-off. So that they know he likes his off-side play. At 15:20 he's played for the off-side again but skewered it to the on-side [ for runs ]. With the Lillee bowling he's found the bowler and mid-off a lot, but got two fours splitting mid-off and the bowler.

Good to see this tape survived. Another one which would have been good was the australia vs west indies test 75/76 unfortunately I think the abc went over those tapes. Pity would have been good to see Fredericks century.
