Here in Australia the spectators all get together prior to the race and ride down to the track on Phillip Island from Melbourne`s outskirts, - the Barry Sheene memorial Run. Watching thousands of Aussie bikers taking part in an event dedicated to an English rider certainly gives you an idea of how much Barry was liked by all of Australia, He was a class act..

As a wannabe biker in the early seventies an annual trip to Brands Hatch and the Transatlantic Trophy was a must, we went in a coach until 1976. As a biker in the mid seventies, from 1976 we all went on our bikes as we had all passed our tests by then. At one of these many meetings I saw Barry in his tent with his bikes, got his autograph on a programme. Still got Barry's autograph in a frame with his picture. He was my hero then and his picture and autograph as one of my most treasured possessions. I'm 61 now, still remember those days so clearly.

A wonderful video with so many memories and faces that I loved and admired. Good old Murry Walker, still with us at 97(ish). Damon Hill, as nice a person as you'll ever meet, and despite being an F1 World Champion, still star struck about being mates with Barry. I met Barry just once when I called by Frank's workshop at the hospital to collect a piston for a Bultaco scrambles bike. Barry was seven moths younger than me, but I had the impression he was younger as he weaved a trials bike through scaffolding outside the workshop. My memories of Barry vs Kenny Roberts was that Barry thought Kenny's style of 'squaring the corner' braking in deep and late, so he could lined up for the exit early and get on full power, slowed Barry who liked to carry speed right through the corner. I did not know that Barry had a gift for languages, or that Carl Fogarty's dad was that infamous back marker. A thoroughly enjoyable video, despite the sadness at the end remembering Barry's death all too early.

Out in practice at a wet Brands Hatch on a RD250LC production racer I was just going across the start finish changing up into top gear as Barry Sheen came past braking for paddock. He was on slicks on a wet track covered in rubber and aluminium from the F1 cars with skirts (remember them). He took Paddock as if on rails, total confidence total control. He was doing a photo "op" with his new Yamaha, straight from Japan with no paint on it. The pics were in Motorcycle News on the Wednesday. It was the year he had his major crash at Silverstone. Gone but not forgotten Barry, thanks for the memories.
