Man, even I forgot of when the mockup was on display to show what it would look like versus how we see the agency today.

I would miss the old trains when these replace them. Love the sound of the hum on some trains when accelerating.

jason dixon Fuck the raiders. Raiders suck and I'm sorry that it's true. Why should the colors be all about Oakland It doesn't go through just Oakland you know (hopefully) -_-

Its hard to believe they've tested these cars under real conditions. Getting in and out past that center pole during heavy use (about 1/3 of the time) will be nothing but fist fights. And getting bikes in/out will be difficult even if the car is totally empty.

Bikes are currently hard to get out but I think this will only be slightly harder but the bike rack will make up for it. The pole could cause trouble but going from two doors to three should help. Plus less seats means note capacity and less obstacles.

Luke - my statements are not hypothetical but based on having used similar cars on other transit systems, and having regularly had to maneuver bikes and other encumbrances on Bart. First - The designer's intent does not support your position. They've said that the point is to reduce the number of cars by increasing the number of people in each car, by having them stand. The design makes clear where they expect those people to stand; in the aisles and the entrance way. Second, the changes you point out illustrate exactly how the new design makes the situation worse. Having fewer seats means more people standing in the entrance, means less room to maneuver a bike without confrontation. Having 3 doors does not alleviate the problem, if there is a pole between the doors and the rack. Further the design removes all other open areas where a bike (or people trying to avoid a bike) can currently position themselves. Finally, the design encourages passengers to stand or place bags in the bike parking area, as its the ONLY open area in the entire car that is not also an aisle. I can confirm, first hand, this design does mean more people can be crowded into each car. But it also means much more friction, confrontation and effort required to get on and off, at ALL times for ALL passengers. For those with kids, bags or bikes it often means demanding that the entire car re-position itself, just so you can get past the door, even during times of average use. Perhaps BART planners really do desire to improve rider experience and make BART amiable to a variety of commuter needs. But the only goal this design delivers on, is crowding more riders onto fewer cars.

***** I will conceded to your points since my personal experience is limited to regular commutes on BART over the past 18 months and I typically use the first car. When I've seen bikes on BART it didn't seem to go smoothly so this seemed better if not equal.

Thank god theres no cloth or carpet, that is the stupidest thing about the current trains. But most importantly I hope these trains are easy to repair, according to BART finding replacement parts for the current fleet is hard and causes the most delays.

k deff I agree, however I cannot help feeling nostalgic about BART with wood paneling, seats with wood paneling and plush, wide seating and carpeting. its so 1970's. BART has to continue to evolve.
