@EugeneOneguine

It's actually how the scene happens in the French version, it's kinda awkward too. Bart is talking about the 2 guys who enslaved him, and the policeman is like "yeah I don't care" and then Bart remembers "oh I should tell him about the anti-freeze in the wine !" (this takes places at the moment where he realizes he can speak French in the English version) and then suddenly the policeman listens to Bart because he told him about the anti-freeze. I assure you, the scene is really awkward hahaha.

French-Canadian here, and i've always loved those "speaks to french people" episodes as a kid. In the French-canadian version, Bart speaks french to the french policeman who doesn't understand him. When he gets his epiphany, he just starts speaking with an over-the-top France french accent. There's a Peanuts movie where they go to France and the same thing happens. In Gilmore Girls, Michel speaks Spanish instead of French, since everybody else speaks French. :)

I always wondered about the antifreeze thing: turns out it's based off the diethylene-glycol poisonings in Austrian wine in the 80's, but I think it's tongue-in-cheek because the french are probably the least likely people to adulterate wine in any way other than water or ice. It's worth noting that the diethylene was mainly used as a cheap way of making the wine much sweeter per south german tastes.
