Basalt fiber and materials are almost perfect in the boat building industry as a greener cheaper alternative to Carbon and E glass. Theres a S. African company already building performance Catamarans called Windelo. It would also give new life to cement hull boat designs. As a Geologist and Environmental Scientist I can see this really making a huge difference in so many areas as a material ...its temperature /fire and chemical resistance makes it truly exciting. I will happily link this item into a number of boat building materials discussions.

I have been researching this material and conduct testings on pull-out, effect of chopped fibres and rebars. I agree with the potential use of basalt rebars. I have a few questions: - How can we increase the elastic modulus as it is very low to satisfy the serviceability - I conducted tests on using chopped fibres in concrete. What is the best way to mix into concrete? Adding basalt chopped fibres may not improve the compression strength of concrete as I found experimentally and I think this is due to the fact that the aggregate crush the fibres during mixing...any idea -

We don't use the fiber to strengthen concrete. We have a geopolymer for that which allows us to use saltwater to produce concrete.

A few dumb questions: Why is pultrusion necessary for Basalt? Can't it be cast into shapes instead? If it were a pure basalt, wouldn't that be ansitropic? Could it be deliberately made into an aerated mass (somewhat similar to natural lava rock)? Of course this wouldn't be for use as rebar, I'm thinking of other applications like blocks. @@jtherealtor I cannot give a citation, but I remember reading from a source I recall as being a reputable medical one that both carbon & glass fibers have the same negative impact on lung tissue as asbestos fibers. No difference. This may or may not be the case with basalt. I understand that people who have looked into it believe that it is safe or relatively safe. There are material properties for such a result, which have to do with its higher elasticity, so when a fiber breaks, it tends not splinter. The implications on fabrication & handling of products, as well as regulating their handling & disposal are stupendous. In the first place clean rooms for all sites where such fibers are cut, and then regulation of all places where fiber fragments may be created (all streets, roads, highways & homes, for instance). And this is not a recent problem either. Think of all those stupid glass reinforced boats, the square miles of glass wool insulation in homes & appliances. Regards, md
