To prevent the spread of the deadly disease The Mysore Government decongested the old town by shifting people from infected places to some far-off spaces which were rich in vegetation, fresh air, and clean water.
Such an extension formed toward the north of the old town was Malleshwaram, named after a deity. Likewise, towards the south, another extension was developed around a Big bull that existed for a few centuries and the locality was called Basavanagudi, the abode of a bull
It is written that an underground stream springs from here. Hence it is called Vrushabhavati. Vrushabha means Bull, So, a Bull stream starts from here, flows underneath, and gets collected in a big depression behind the temple forming a clear water pond. You cannot see the pond now. but I can make you feel its presence by showing a very rare picture of the pond captured excellently by one Mr. C Rajagopal
