I had my wedding gown cleaned and put in a storage box and kept it for 30 years. Then my niece was getting married and she wanted to wear the dress. After she wore it she returned it to me so I could have it cleaned and stored again. I was delighted to see her wear it and she was happy to have a "vintage" gown to wear. I have pictures of both of us wearing the same gown displayed in a prominent place in my home. Regarding your maternity dresses... I can understand that you want to keep them because your mother made them and someone recommended that you donate them. Another option, and one I would probably do if I were in your shoes, is to have them restructured into "non-maternity" dresses that you can wear now. I love watching your videos. As the old timers here in the south say, "You are as handy as a pocket in a shirt!"

You always amaze me Sophia and to think you work outside the home full time. I wish I had one tenth of your energy. I've worked for a few years now getting organized, for me it's been slow but it's well worth it. The beauty of organization is that you don't have to be a minimalist. Clutter isn't clutter as long as it has a place and you know where it is. Thank you for your wonderful videos you are so inspiring. God bless.

Have come to the conclusion that your home is like the Tardis! I love your home, you have so many rooms! I wish I had all that space. Houses in the UK don't usually have a basement, unless they are around 1900 homes. The basket would look great spray-painted (like the garden chair you did) and then filled with bulbs or plants maybe? You have given me so many ideas for things to do with my home and have given me the impetus to actually get on and do it! That is the important thing. So far so good on the home front. Actually I could do with moving house, then I would HAVE to do it all asap.

Hi Sophia. About the dresses your mom made for you ... I had some like that; but, like you, I was not going to wear them again. I took a picture of each of them in great light and then I put them into a fabric bin so when I have the time, I will use the fabric for a quilt or pillow, or even on a scrapbook page I create about my mom. That way, you are still keeping the memory alive, while honoring her gift to you. And every time I look at my creations, they will remind me of her. :)

Hi Sophia, First congrats on the weight loss! I am a minimalist but struggle with the sentimental thing. I am a sewer/needleworker and I like papercrafts. Here's what I do: clothes I make a copy on the copier of the dress, shirt, whatever then put it along with the pic of the item in a memory book. I also either minimize my kids artwork and put in a memory book or take a pic of a few sheets at a time. U can also use the material to make a crazy quilt style pillow which is what I'm doing with a number of family members clothing. U can also if u have enough clothing, make 4" squares and make a quilt throw. Keep up the good work. I enjoy ur videos!

What a great video and great advice to just start! I kept my wedding dress - all packed up from dry cleaner- for YEARS. Then after moving many times I said why? And gave it to good will. I would take photos of your maternity dresses and clip a swatch from each and put it all together in a shadow box then get rid of - but that's coming from someone who moves a lot - and clutter makes life too difficult and stressful. After watching this video I will be tackling my basement storage (catch all) room tomorrow!! Thank you!! Xoxo

Just watched it backwards so see this after watching part 2, also love this one. You make the videos so well and entertaining. I see you've got some great suggestions on the dresses/sentimental items. Reconstructing, taking photos, donating, You could take photos before and either reconstruct or donate. But it sounds to me that they are in your way and you don't enjoy them as much since they aren't being used and just taking up space, all there is, is the memory. It's kind of nice but really the pain of the space taking outweighs the short joy of seeing it again hanging in the bags, with photos you can see them all the time. You could even make quilts or something crafty with them, I saw you have fabrics stored so I'm guessing you are into sewing and making things from fabric. It could be like a quilt and on one piece you could have had a photo of the dress or you in the dress printed on fabric that you can sow in the quilt. That makes a warm close to you memory that's functional for everyone. But it IS another to do hehe. So maybe it's easier to just photo+donate. after decluttering pretty much everything, I'm down to my most treasured sentimental items and I don't want them taking so much space, and I'm going to do the photo thing, and I want the photos to be really fun and well taken. But yeah I've realized that I treasure space more than a non functional item with some sentimental value if I'm not *really passionate* about it, (absolutely glowing when I see it) I consider letting it go after taking photos or at least reconstructing it in a way that is easier for me to store it.

I love your videos Sophia and find them so motivating. I stopped keeping items for sentifmental reasons as I was becoming overwhelmed by things which caused anxiety rather than beautiful memories. Over the years we collect so many things that bring us pleasure until they threaten to overtake us. My solution was to take digital pictures of these treasures and get rid of the item itself. I then put all of the pictures of the sentifmental items along with photos of the person/people or vacation associated with the item (if applicable) onto a DVD. Now when I am feeling blue or just want to feel good, I plug in the DVD and watch it. I thought I would miss the things but I didn't at all as I still had the memory (and the DVD).
@my2jedi

The dvd is a great idea! I have just recently experimented with taking photos of a few items that will only deteriorate with time - not to mention taking up space. I plan to just print them with my regular photos, but put them in a separate (sort of cheap) photo album, with a note attached. One example is several gifts made for me by old students. These won't matter to anyone but me (not a "family heirloom" type of thing), but I would like to keep some memory of it - at least until I decide I don't need to anymore. The dvd idea is even better, though - saving the space of an album!

You are so funny with your kids! I love your little furry "helpers". I keep many sentimental items - we call them Treasures. I don't know what kind of fabric your maternity dresses are, but... would they be appropriate for making into quilts? (Or having someone do it for you.) It may be painful to cut up the dresses since your mom made them, but if you made two, you could use them on a guest bed or otherwise display/keep them, and then someday pass them onto your boys. I have two boys, and have started thinking about that "need to have two" for these keepsakes, to avoid any fussing or confusion in the future. There are few things more delicious than the smell of old books! Thanks for all the inspiration - you amaze me!

Sophia mygreatchallenge yes I am same, I cannot stand "no doing", I'm always thinking about what needs doing next, I call it "continually improving" but my husband doesn't understand. On a day off from work, he sits and watches movies, sleeps, relaxes... But a day off work for me is, "yay, I can catch up with the gardening/laundry/cleaning/garage"... Hang on a minute, what's the difference there? Why is my day *off* still so busy? But if I sit and watch TV my mind is saying, " you could be doing the ironing now..." And you definitely are giving your life some meaning... This KZitem channel sure helps a lot of people realise they are not alone in struggling with life/house management. When we are continually bombarded with perfect, spotlessly clean houses, perfect housewives, barely breaking a sweat... we feel inadequate. You are showing those of us with jobs and normal lives and normal houses and...gasp... dust!... That we're not alone! You're leading the revolution Sophia! Just remember to relax and enjoy the journey too! xx

There was a lady in our church who saved a lot of her kids baby clothes. She made quilts out of them. For the girl each square there was a little girl sewn on it made from the fabric of her baby clothes. And for the boy she did the same thing but it was a boy. They were queen size quilts and she gave them to both her kids on there 18th birthday. Maybe you could make quilts out of the dresses it don't have to be all fancy like that lady did or even as big. But at least you would still has the memory of your mom in it. Or even turn the dresses into something you would use often instead of them just hanging in the basement. But who am I to talk. Lol my wedding dress had been sitting in my closet for 6 years in a garment bag. Lol time for me to fin a project to do with it. I am trying to lose weight and I'm am "using" the wedding dress motivation so I can fit back into it. Once I can fit back into it I may do something else with my dress

What about donating the maternity dresses, so that they can be used again? Also, you may be interested in learning about minimalism (as it pertains to "stuff", not art or decorating necessarily). Some good info out there on blogs like "Becoming Minimalist" or "The Minimalists" (no affiliation)...it has really helped me to see my stuff in a new light. Okay, I'm off to find out what other organization/cleaning/purging videos you have, since I really liked this one. :)

It is a lot of nice material in those dresses, and they seem to be of similar color palette. If you are a seamstress, or know a willing one, you could make a nice sized bedspread quilt by buying some contrasting color fabrics (like creams and green colored calico) to round out the design. Reds are natural compliments to your green paint color choices around your house so it would look nice. If mom is up to the task, perhaps she could take those dresses and create something new that would be equally as precious to you. I loved your pep talk @ 24:37
