As a general rule of thumb for loops are used when the number of iterations can be known or is finite, on the other hand while loops are used when the number of loops is unknown or potentially infinite. Also very important when iterating in bash is the fact that bash separates elements on a list by spaces, which can mean unwanted side effects when your elements consist on two words or more.

I've taken longer online courses which have taught me less in substantially more time. Good on you for keeping the material concise and easily digestible!

A tutorial for emailing a log file would be awesome! Thank you so much for your videos!

This tutorial helped me a lot! After learning how bash scripting works, I added Linux support for projects including Wwise-Unpacker that extracts audio from Hoyo games like Genshin Impact.

Jay, thanks for doing this series. Scripting is one of my weak spots and your thorough explanations have helped immensely. I have my LFCS exam this Friday and have been crunching and studying to prepare and this guide has been great. Please keep doing tutorials and series like these for people like me. :) Thanks again.

It seems like in the tar example, that it would have made more sense to put all the log files into a single tar.gz file rather than individual files. What is the syntax to achieve that using tar or gzip?

Great tutorial. Not sure what steps to take after this tutorial. Whether to keep the tar files or the originals - which is best when - and how to accomplish keeping either. Please elaborate.

The tar command is probably not the best one in such a scenario. I am sure it was just used to demo the do loop. Better in such a case to use: compress $file.

In my case I'm running CFD simulations en openFoam, and I wanna do it with different angle of attacks, so I have many directories like 0, 2, 4, 6 etc, according to the AoA, so with a for loop I'll be able to automatize this process

So why would you not put a $ in front of "for file"? For instance, "for $file". Does bash automatically assume file to be a variable in a for loop for this instance?

there's nothing special about the word file. The dollar sign isn't used when creating/assigning variables

c create a new archive z uses gzip to zip it, v is verbose mode to see progress of compression, and -f says the next argument will be a file

why do you have $ sign on tar file name? "tar -czvf $file.tar.gz" ? thanks!
@lencone
Жыл бұрын
You may've found an answer already, but... Well, file is, after all, a variable. When you put a `$` before any variable, bash replaces the variable name for the variable value. So in the case of `tar -czvf $file.tar.gz` bash replaces $file for whatever file pertains to the current iteration, so if the file is 'auth.log', it will be turned into `tar -czvf auth.log.tar.gz`
