Clearly, you're 100% right about the science. But I also spend a lot of time working with people who are learning Chemistry for the first time, and from my experience as a teacher, I know it's very unlikely that a 13 year-old will have any idea what you mean when you describe an electron as a "stationary wave with its maximum around the nucleus." I know I'm simplifying here and I know you're technically right, but a perfect explanation isn't worth anything if students can't understand any of it.

yeah, that's sort of true, but atoms don't vary in size *that* much. like a hydrogen atom has a radius of 53 pm (picometers), and a uranium atom has a radius of 81 pm. so maybe it would be 1 million vs. 1.2 million or 1.5 million, but it's not like it's gonna be 1 million vs. 10 million or 100 million.

I just realized it sounds redundant to assume eletrons don't just fly away from the atom because they are negativelly charged in relation to the positivelly charged nucleus. Instead, I think what we call negative charge is derived from the fact that these tiny little probabilistic stuff are stuck to their inner core, that we call positive. In the end, we just don't understand why it is like that. We just know how this works, once being like this. Crazy hum ! It leads me to think about Heiddeger "dasein" concept of the true self of things, which we'll never be able to experience. By the way, I love your videos, they are so funny and well explained. I like the hand done animations !!

Great job on explaining these concepts. However, I'd like to point out that your number of electrons (4) should equal the number of protons (3) in your model of an atom. I suggest reversing your protons and neutrons in your model.
@tdewitt451
10 жыл бұрын
Shelly, the number of protons and electrons does not have to be equal, and for many atoms, it is not. If the number of protons and neutron isn't equal, it just means that the atom has an electrical charge (+ or -). To better understand this, I suggest you watch my video called "What is an Ion?"
@shellytonen
10 жыл бұрын
Tyler DeWitt Ah, I guess it is a vocabulary difference. I always use (as did my instructors) the term "atom" to mean the electrically neutral particle (ie, protons = electrons). I use the word "ion" to refer to particles that have lost or gained electrons, thereby making the number of protons and the number of electrons unequal. Thanks for all your videos - you really have a gift of taking complex ideas and explaining them so clearly!
@Als1822
