helped me to understand the basic feasible solution and understand the concept, however I was taught that you start with the most negative value for the pivot.

In general if you don't know the final solution, you should start with the column corresponding to the most negative reduced cost, but it seems the author knew that selecting X1 as the pivot would lead to an optimal solution with only 1 pivot operation. It's not fair to say it was 'wrong' it was just not intuitive using traditional methods. If you select X2, you would have to pivot once more to get x1 back into your basis instead of having additional slack.
