Thank you so much, I think I'm beginning to become a grammar nerd! I could geek out on grammar for hours. I speak three languages, but struggled with my third which forced me to learn grammar now I'm hooked, on tenses, verbs (modal auxiliaries), and now phonetics. This is only the beginning, Grammer is like a drug to me now!

It's so cool that an international pronunciation alphabet exists. If one were to learn how to pronounce all the sounds in it, one would be able to read aloud any word in any accent of any language, as long as a native or a speaker of the language can translate it to the IPA

Excellent video, Greg! But there was a little mistake in the IPA symbol for /i/ (6:12) and /ɪ/ (6:59): Actually, it goes like this: /iː/ sheep, feet, leave, peek /ɪ/ ship, fit, live, pick But good job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@patbreacadh
Жыл бұрын
Yes. This is a great video, good work indeed. 🙏But I think you could correct this mistake with an on-screen card? Also the /ŋ/ sound in, say, _feeling_ does not have, as such, a /g/ sound at the end of it. The sound of voiced velar nasal /ŋ/ is going towards a /g/ but actually stops short of including it. This adding of /g/ is something most French speakers learning English typically do.
@marcocecotti1125
Жыл бұрын
Exactly! There is another mistake indeed. The e sound in bed is not /e/ (closed e like in say) but /ε/ (open e): /b εd/
@gorgolyt
Жыл бұрын
Quite a serious mistake, especially when he claims that i is "ship" but i: is "sheep". Those are two very different vowels, not a lengthening of the same vowel.
@gorgolyt
Жыл бұрын
Also the a in "cart" is not a long version of the a in "cat". They have different symbols so this should have been obvious. Big mistake.

Great video to explain the IPA to beginners, but there are a few mistakes: -The ŋ does not include the "g"-sound at the end. -There's no i in the transcription of 'ship', but an ɪ without a dot, while in sheep the i: should have a dot. -You're coupling up vowels in short-long pairs, but those pairs aren't actually related: i, u, ɑ, and ɔ all exist as short vowels too, though not necessarily in standard English pronunciation. They are produced very differently than ɪ, ʊ, æ and ɒ respectively. You can easily test this by checking how your mouth does completely different things for the vowels in e.g. words like foot and goose.

It needs to be pointed out there is a huge difference between British (especially Cockney) and American accents which in many cases causes some difficulty and misunderstanding in communication not to mention dialect and idioms being used here and there. Great vid overall 👍

Omg I’m a native speaker of American English who has read books since age 3, studied other languages, has an English degree, watches lots of BBC shows, has English and Australian friends, and can normally make an educated guess on these. I got lost quickly! 😂 The biggest problem is the non rhotic pronunciation. How much do I rely on pronounced Rs to recognize IPA? I subscribed. I clearly have a lot to learn. Thank you 😂😂

The funny thing is, I am pretty good at english and the pronunciation but I came here because our school requires us to know the transcription, even though I don't really need it. Also this vowel 7:43 for me is really hard to understand, but sadly our school teaches us mostly british english so we use it
