Today I learned that the lyric in You're So Vain is "You had one eye on the mirror and watched yourself gavotte"... so now I'm here. I always thought it was "...watched yourself go by". Oh, and I'm here because Carly Simon is using her song in a political ad against Donald Trump.

I always thought it was "go by" too! Seems like a LOT of us thought the same thing! We all have to see what the heck a gavotte is XD Also instead of "wife of a close friend" I thought it was " wife of a Postman" you know he's so vain he sleeps with the wife of the mailman who slept with his wife. "Oh I'll show you Mr. Mailman" lol :)

This guy seems to be going through basic ballet positions but without the arms and with a few tutti-frutti leg moves thrown in. Is this what modern ballet evolves from?

Yes! It is surprising, but Louis XIV loved dancing so much, he had invented ballet and was its first star, dancing as the ancient Greek sun god, Apollo.

The gavotte was different through the ages. When exactly did they dance like this? Renaissance? Baroque? I'd be really grateful for an answer.
@karismcconnellcoulsonlives7898
3 жыл бұрын
Mostly the 1680s-1750s. It was invented by the French peasants, and was a 'kissing dance' because as the participants moved between partners, they'd kiss everyone they danced with. The dances was adopted by the French Nobility, who "polished" the steps (basically removed the kissing part) and made it and official dance for courts and even English people danced the Gavotte.
