When I was a kid, I wanted a jazzmaster so bad. I was never able to find one....I remember the guy at the guitar store was like, " why do you want one of THOSE guitars. you should get a strat or a tele instead" Now you can find them everywhere and everyone plays them. how times have changed...

Jazzmaster and Jaguar lines have always been a premium line and made in limited production, unlike the staples of the Fender lineup. The fact that they initially didn't hit home with their target audience lead Fender to produce them in very limited runs and models. Now, they're much more popular, but still not made en mass. I love both and I now want the Parallel Universe Jag Strat. I get the looks with the 25.5 scale length that much more suits my enormous hands.

If you go to a music shop tomorrow they’ll say the same thing. They are build with parts that make them sound very different and harder to setup. It has challenges that may trip up a beginner guitarist. But you’re right, now they’re at most guitar centers.

People either love or hate Jazzmasters and I love them. A Jazzmaster + Reverb + Delay = Heaven. They're extremely unique sounding and they are great combined with pedals due to their bright and crisp tone. You can bury them in fuzz and still hear clearly defined notes. I owned a Tele for quite some time, and it also "cut like a knife." Folks who are NOT fans of the Telecaster say that the bridge pickup especially feels like, "a nail through the forehead." Although it is also a single-coil, the Jazzmaster's pickups are flat and wide as opposed to the Tele's tall and thin design. This means that the Jazz master's pickups produce a much warmer an mellower tone.
@darkeststar0

P90s have screw pole pieces which are not magnetic. Two bar magnets below the coil produce the magnetic field, kinda like a humbucker. Jazzmaster pickups have magnetized pole pieces like Strat and Tele pickups. The other big difference is that JM pup coils are wider and more shallow than P90s. Part of why they have such a large frequency range.

The Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster has pickups constructed like P90's...I really like their tone and that hotter signal sounds superb when it hits the dirt pedals. Almost having a hard time convincing myself to replace them, but I need really quiet pickups for recording / performing (I do a lotta clean rhythm work -funk & soul music primarily). Try to track one down and do a shoot out with the Fender Classic Player Jazzy. I chose the Mascis for the neck and the pickups.

Not that hard!! Good grief! But I guess if you have never played one, how can you know? The lower switches/knobs are just like any guitar. The upper, switches from the lower lead circuit, to the pre-set capacitor rhythm (or darker, jazz lead circuit). It has a buried roller volume control so you can preset the volume, and a buried roller tone control, which darkens the sound even more. These two circuits allow you to pre-set a lead volume and a rhythm volume which is already set to a darker tonality. Very handy for changing volume and tone on the fly.
@weinerschnitzelrock1

The dual system enabled the player to switch from rhythm playing to lead at a flip of a switch. In the fifties a guitarist would play rhythm, and then take over as a lead guitarist, then back to rhythm . The settings could be pre-set. With a flick of a switch one could go from a lower volume bassy rhythm setting to a louder trebly setting for lead solo in a split second.

Quite simple: Normal Mode - the pots are 1 meg ohm - less high frequencies leaked to ground. Rhythm mode: pots are 100k ohm - more of the high frequencies leak to ground, so the tone is darker/more mellow. Cool guitar, but the circuitry could be far simpler to achieve the same, or even more versatility. I've rewired mine so that the Rhythm circuit can be applied to both pickups!

This guitar allows you to make presets for volume and tone, so that you can just flip a switch and go from a rhythm tone, to a brighter, lead tone, on the fly. Very functional for actual players who actually go on stage and play and sing and do real, live guitar work. Run this through a real amp, and it kicks, with much better bottom end than this shows ...

They never caught on much with jazz players but the surf guitarists picked them up in the 60s and they were big, then punk and alternative bands and even some rockers and country players play them nowadays. Two things I found out about the Jazzmaster: It´s not an alternative Strat. It´s a completely different guitar. And it´s been designed for flatwound strings - the heavier, the bet-. ter. This guitar has tremendous and delicious tone, and this will be lost when sent through a million pedals. If you just want to shred or pose, you don´t need the American Vintage model - you can find cheaper versions that are more like a Strat, thus will be easier to use with round wound strings.

Having built a kit Jazzmaster guitar I can almost predict what happened with this design. The Rhythm circuit, I'm guessing, was trying emulate a more jazzier rhythm sound but the only pots that would physically fit into that bracket that's underneath the pickguard is a 1mOhm & 50kOhm pot. No 500 or 250 KOhm pots available, even today, that would fit there. So Leo improvised with capacitor values but the turn of the roller knobs is not as responsive low down as the 250 or 500 K pots are. Doesn't help that those slide switches also have a lesser life than the toggle switch and that bridge and vibrato mechanism are both bad designs. I grew up playing guitar when these guitars were definitely NOT in vogue so I;'m very dismissive of it's abilities, though you have to acknowledge that it has a unique tone. I appreciate the effort you took to lay out the sound of this guitar and it provides a valuable reference point for folks looking at this option in their guitar arsenal.

So would the 50k ohm pot make the sound brighter than a 250k one then?
@darkeststar0
6 жыл бұрын
Pots are the same size regardless of value. The rhythm circuit tone and volume pots are not wired the way the normal vol and tone are. The different wiring scheme is what produces the darker tone. It's more likely Fender was just trying out some new designs, and wanted to put controls very close to the player's right hand but without getting in the way of strumming. Hence the sideways pots with roller knobs.
@JulianA-tr6pt
6 жыл бұрын
darkeststar0 darkeststar0 Actually, what makes it darker is indeed the 50K pot. Even when turned all the way up, it's bleeding much more treble to ground though the capacitor, since it's only 50K compared to 250K-1Meg. Think of it as having a Strat with the tone knob permanently stuck at 20% of it's highest setting. The wiring style of the rhythm circuit isn't enough to cut all that treble. Also, the pots used in the rhythm circuit are actually smaller sized in order to fit on the bracket. I've messed with these circuits myself and can confirm this all. With that said, the original commenters theory is also probably not very accurate, but it's just a theory, and all we can do is theorize based on facts. Chances are, the pot size isn't stricly why Leo chose the values he did. He just was likely expirementing, or perhaps he managed to get a ton of 1Meg pots and liked them enough to use them (Leo is known for using parts he could buy in bulk for cheap). Leo seemed to like clear, clean tones, so for the lead circuit, he used 1Meg pots which barely change your tone until you roll down the tone knob (again, it's 4 times higher value than a Strat's 250K pot!). Same on Jaguars, which are very similar, but use .01uf caps in both circuits and have a 56k resistor which is slowly put in series with your signal as you turn the tone pot down.

These sound very different with two humbuckers. You can play everything from The Ventures to The Beatles to Jazz, to Van Halen. Curtis Novak makes the best Jazzmaster pickups on earth. My go to are his JMV in the neck & JM90 in the bridge. He makes tons of other variations, Widerange humbuckers & gold foils that fit under Jazzmaster covers.

@@donewithmodernlife Lollars are nice too. I think the vintage 65s are the way to go personally. They sound beautiful and I've put them in my J Mascis after hearing them in the 60s roadworn.

Feeling curious about why he seems, at times, a bit of dismissive about it all.

They are stock, yes. BTW this is a Fender American Vintage 1965 Fire Mist Silver Jazzmaster (just added that to the description)

@1:20 "fUN" PUNk bands? J. Mascis claims to have been born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. IT'S WHY HIS MUSIC IS SO DEPRESSING (that and the fact he used soap operas as inspiration...)

Rhythm circuit sounds like shit ( I hate mud) ....I’d rather not have that extra crap on the guitar. Also, I like guitar, but too many millennial types use it, which would make me not want to use it.

When you edit yourself every 5 seconds its distracting and it sends a message that you're being fake. Just talk to us, mistakes and all.
