This is assuming the sound guy doesn't make your bass sound like crap and ignore you when you tell him that is the case. True, even if you do have an amp, the sound guy can still make you sound like crap. But at least if you have an amp next to you, you can sound good to yourself, and if you sound good to yourself, you will play better. That said, I do have a Genzler DI/Preamp. But I show up at a gig with only that if I'm confident the soundman knows what he is doing. If not, I'm going to bring my GK combo amp (with a built-in DI). In the band I generally play with, I have direct control over the sound system (I'm pretty much the soundman)--that is when I bring just the preamp/DI. I also play guitar and I tend to use just a pre/effects unit (Tech 21) and that sounds great straight through the PA system. But it seems to me that it is easier to screw the bass sound up if it is going direct (depending on the soundman's competence). As for in-ears, I've never heard my bass sound good through in ears. Just do not like the sound. Plus it's like sitting at home playing along to MP3s. So I at least need a good floor monitor if I'm going direct. For recording, I never use an amp. It's always either the Genzler Pre or plugins on the recording software.

@@christocr Interesting experience. I don't know how a sound guy could mess up a SansAmp.

@@klaymeister Most don't. But some of them come from a "DJ" background and have a certain EQ curve in their head that is just way too much really low end coming out of the subs and it makes the bass guitar super muddy and undefined, and a rather unrealistic idea of "the perfect bass tone." I even had one clown that, in his tri-amped PA set up had my bass guitar muted in the mid and high end speaker cabs. So the bass guitar was routed to only only come out of the subs that were set to crossover at 80 hz or so. At that gig I was wondering why my bass sounded great out of my amp and totally sucked out front. That was it. When I asked him and he told me that, I calmly told him to run it full range. And suddenly it sounded better, even to him. Some of these guys have some pretty weird ideas. Luckily most aren't that clueless.
