You mentioned playing that one lick up the octave... have you thought of making a video on various extension/B string excerpts and whether to take them up the octave or play as written? That could be a cool idea! Great video, this analysis of the excerpt is so helpful.

thanks Leif! that's actually a really good idea for a video...could definitely be a good topic. there's lots of places where it's "typical" to play down the octave...think that first page of Brahms 2 mvmt 1 at the end of the first big crescendo being an example of the D being taken down the octave to match the cello line. thanks for the suggestion, and thanks for watching!

Do you use 1-2-4 fingering for neck positions and 1-2-3 for advanced position from f by index on g string right??

Great stuff all around! Always have some good info. I’m wondering about that first group of 16th notes, I’ve been told in the past the line should come away slightly from the first note so that the emphasis is on the first C sf, same with the Eb run. Wondering your thoughts on this?

i can definitely see an argument for that! i think the goal is definitely the emphasis on the first note, as well as clarity on all five notes. personally i've found that when i try to "fall away" from the first note, it sort of loses that "wild" characteristic, but if you can pull it off, go for it!

Hello Mr. Scharmann! I am a senior in highschool and I am just now trying All-State. I have had the same bass teacher since 8th grade but I hadn’t seen really great improvement up until sophomore year. Anyways, the state audition is on the 28th, region being the 21st. I loved your audition prepping videos and hope to implement some of the techniques in your series. Thank you for your hard work!

I'm a violist primarily, I just bought a bass to learn. At what point will I need to pay for an extension? Can I get through the first 4 Suzuki books for example? Just trying to plan ahead. Thanks

you wouldn't need an extension really ever, unless you were planning to pursue a career in orchestral bass. even then, an extension is never required for the job. i have heard that some orchestras will require either an extension or a five string (the latter particularly in Europe), but i've only seen that requirement after being offered the job.
