Carter, if you want to get back to basics and pare things down, try kayak fishing. Three rods is about max and three small flats (with basically is in this video). Shuck the "aggregate tonnage" and just have fun. I'm in my mid 50's, been kayaking for the last five years and I still feel like I'm 12 again every single time I launch.

When I was a kid, my grandmother would always take me out fishing at my uncle’s pond. She passed on a few years back, and I’ve been wanting to start fishing again as a way to reconnect and honor her memory. We would always just use worms that I’d gotten from her garden, so this video helped a lot with showing me what to look for in an actual tackle box. As soon as it starts to thaw out a bit, I’m definitely taking this advice. Thanks for the video!

As a 55 year old who’s been fishing my whole life, I have spent enough on tackle to pay for a college education and yet I almost never go fishing without picking up some night crawlers and minnows unless I am ice fishing then you have to have waxies . But don’t get me wrong, I really love my selection of tackle as well as my rods and reels but I gotta tell ya, live bait is the best way to guarantee success. If I knew then what I know now, I would have spent a lot more time fishing and enjoying life. Nobody ever gets to the end of their life and says “gosh I wish I would have spent more time working”.

Yep, live bait almost always guarantees more bites. Lures start to bring in more of a “sport or skill” aspect. If you can master fishing a soft plastic worm with a Texas rig, you will have the best go to bait for the rest of your life....and it’s fun. Spinner baits are versatile too so I agree with this video 100%. In the hot temps, fishing top water though as the sun rises or sets is the most fun however. That’s where a basic buzz bait comes in.

I just build a few basic tackle boxes for my brother and my brother in law for Father’s Day. All of these things were in the boxes I put together for them. Some other nice basic baits for a beginner box would include some inline spinners, a hallow body frog (for when the vegetation is just too thick to fish below the surface), a popper, a chatterbait, a jerkbait and some soft plastic swimbaits with keel weighted swimbait hook with a twist lock.

Folks Gene knows what he is talking about.. I have never even heard of a Niko rig until I watched one of Gene's Video's. I did exactly what he said to do and went to Lake Fork in Texas, which can be extremely hard to catch a Bass there, and I pulled out a Niko rig and caught a 2 and half pounder within 5 minutes, and my boss who is a long time bass fisherman caught nothing that day and nobody in the other dozen boats around us caught anything either. Thank you Gene, you are a great Teacher! So listen to him and you will catch fish.

I usually catfish. The first time I caught a large mouth was in my dads friends pond he stocks when I was only 8. We ran out of worms I caught a sunny with the last one and I wasn't done fishing so I just tossed it back in the water every one kept telling me it's to big for this pond there's nothing that big in here a few minutes later I got a huge hit and when I said I had something they just thought it was the sunny pulling still until it really started to take my line I ended up reeling in a huge large mouth. He didn't even know it was in his pond.

I’m an avid angler, but new to bass fishing. My first thought was to hang out in the fishing section, and ask questions about bass fishing, but just as with tackle, the advice is overwhelming. I took the advice of some local old timers, and started a bass box with their suggestions. I’ve since caught loads of white bass, and the biggest perch I’ve ever seen, but I just can’t seem to land the elusive largemouth. They are there, but finicky. My next thought was to look for some videos to give me better insight.. tricks, and tips. I just wanted to say thank you for your videos. You break everything down, and make it very simple to understand. After watching a few of your videos I’ve realized that, I just need to also simplify myself. You’ve taught me to look at my surroundings in a whole different way.

This is a really good video! After watching years worth of your videos I have seen what works for you. I went out and got just about everything and didn't catch squat. I was frustrated and almost stopped fishing completely after a few months of trying and failing. I tried the Ned Rig and everything, yet still not one single bass. When I finally made it to a worm hook with a Zoom black Trick Worm on a Texas Rig I started slamming them. I had no idea that what you said on your old videos meant it works from a boat and not hardly from the bank. Now I can catch a bass on a bad day with the wrong weather. On a boat I can hit them, not as good as you seem to be, but good enough to never get skunked, all because of your videos. AND because of your teaching, I taught my 7 year old son and now he loves fishing. Last week he got a 7 pounder with a mouth so wide I pulled out the gut hook with my bare hands. THIS video is what no one on the internet seems to want to say to anyone. THIS is 100% perfect! Thank you Gene!

I was just in Chattanooga for the first time last week. What a beautiful city in a beautiful state. Great video. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights.

Hello sir, I've been fishing for 33 years and never used anything other than a zebco 33 and nightcrawlers. I am attempting to change that up so I really appreciate this video! Just wanted you to know that you are doing a good job.

I've already got two of my grandchildren in to fishing ages 4 & 6 the 6 year old with in a few times of fishing and practicing his casting a close fase he's gone from barley getting the line wet to 40 feet out and now working on a open face spinning reel

Great stuff Gene. I love that you are getting back to basics. not that i dont love all of your videos. I like that you break it down that fish either want it on the bottom/slow or a moving bait. Sometimes I over complicate things and its refreshing to see someone break it down and remind me to keep it simple.

Some of the best performing lures have been ones I've actually found, certainly doesn't go for all of them but I also gives you ideas to branch out of choose things you wouldn't orginidary go for, espically if you have nothing to go on like unexplored unfamiliar waters.

Haha! I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who uses lures that people have lost or thrown away.

Skip the bullet weights and expensive hooks and go to some bulk plain jig heads. You can add plastic, bait, skirts, or other trailers and can be rigged weedless. A bass guide told me hooks and line are one of the biggest markups in the industry. I would also caution a new fisherman that some water is full of snags, and you’re going to lose tackle to anything on the bottom. Small spinner bait, a 2-3” floating Rapala, and a weedless spoon is where I would start. Add a package of 5” scented power bait that can be used as bodies or trailers.

Gene, fishing is my passion. I started out watching you and IF. I'm taking out a new fisher this weekend to teach him how to fish.

Tennessee has Bill and Georgia has Gene. The two absolute best at teaching new fishermen. Gene literally picked up where Bill left off ❤

I wish I watched this before starting a tackle box. I used a plastic ammo box for my tackle box, a tiny jar of salmon eggs, a pack of the plastic rubbery pumpkinseed nightcrawlers, Eagle claw #6 hooks, and a needle nose pliers. When I went with my friend fishing previously for the first time he had given me a hook, a sinker, and a bass worm.

Thank you, this is so helpful. Haven't been fishing since Dad brought me as a kid. We fished in the ocean bay, near San Francisco, just cast fishing with grass shrimp from the local tackle shop (that's what everybody there used). But now that I live in mid-U.S. far in-land, I'll be fishing in local lakes and possibly rivers. So I'm sure it will be very different. I will have to learn everything from scratch.

Awesome video man. There’s a lot of videos out there with questionable content, whether it’s brand specific advice, or just plain uninformative junk. You somehow steer clear of both, and I appreciate every video you make!

Zoom green pumpkin trick worm... word. Also amazing when fished weightless in shallow water.
