This series is about short, easily digestible "hacks" that allow you to get more out of your current setup.

Room correction is a wonderful thing. Rather than busting out a slide rule, SPL meters, measurement software, and diving in to acoustic theory, speaker timing, etc... Instead you can plug in the mic and the AVR does the heavy lifting for you.
Room correction is not perfect though, and some versions are better than others, (Audyssey "XT 32" is better than "XT") but overall it simplifies setup.
That said, the bass values can be a little underwhelming. On the other side of the token, some people overdrive their subs, making it the dominant focal point.
This is how I personally find the right balance for me.
A friend of mine who was into audio long before I was, told me to just dial in the subs until they are just filling in the bottom end. He didn't have deep bass subs, but it's a practice I've followed ever since.
The reason I suggest bottoming out the AVR Subwoofer value is to take it to extremes. If you turn your subs off completely, the sound is very thin and anemic. As you slowly increase the bass levels, the music will "fill in" more and more, and become more "real".
If you go too far, the bass will be too heavy, but starting low has always been easier to me than starting high. Sometimes this process can take days, especially with new equipment.
When I first set up new subs, my ears take a bit of a beating. I tend to "listen harder" at higher levels than normal, which is a little fatiguing itself. The next day, it's common for me to dial it down just a touch.
Subs also break in over time, and I have to dial it down even further.
BTW, my comment about bad center channels is more directed to older center channels. Newer center channels tend to be less offensive, but it's still something to look out for.
As I said in the video, "Lords of Summer" by Metallica seems to save me at least a half hour or more of fine tuning, I get there with this song, and then verify with the Spotify list: • Metallica: Lords of Su...
