So your last video and this video are the 1st video to give me kind of...reassurance. I started making bass music recently and how I usually would make music (which I guess for my rock/metal stuff this may be improper, hell even for bass music) is like I'd take a kick or 2 or whatever layer them or have a single one and put it into a kick bus which had a limiter on it, same with snares. I'd have 1 to 3 snare layers for different tones all sent to the snare bus with a limiter (obviously because without a limiter they would massivly clip leaving no "headroom") then send those to a drum bus with all my other drum elements that also had a limiter to the master which guess what....had a limiter at the end of the chain plus Ozone which I used for stereo stuff (bass in mono) and some dynamic compression (very light like -1db across the spectrum) into a maximizer that I used to get the loudness I needed. But Sometimes this would sound to distorted. Or people would tell me I'm doing things wrong. I spent an entire week watching Gain Staging videos because apparently that's what you're "supposed" to do to prevent clipping and the "issues" people were saying I was having...but here you are like, fuck that. I push my kick 13db passed 0, clippers baby! and I'm like....How do I find a medium here where I don't have to completely tear my tracks apart to "gain stage' while getting the cleanest or a cleaner sound.

Saturator set to “Digital Clip” mode acts just like G Clip. I did a Null test and the digital clip mode on saturator with “high quality mode” off gave me a perfect Null with G clip when both cranked to 12db. G clip offers the shape of the clip which is nice, Saturator doesn’t but if your like me and like the hard clip shape on gclip, saturator set to digital clip is it’s twin :)
@mil3sperhour
Жыл бұрын
i figured that might have been the case. thats really good to know thank you! I think i'll stick with gclip since it also prevents it from going into the red, i know digital clip isn't leaking that much into the red zone but its nice to get the assurance haha.
@itswhzly

@@mil3sperhour ya g clip is awesome and you won’t get any red it’ll actually clip at 0.0 as long as high quality mode is turned off :)

@@itswhzly actually, saturator does leak some peaks above 0 dB with high quality turned off, but by a very tiny amount (even the peak indicator in ableton turns yellow). if you set the output any lower (even a insanely small amount like -0.001 dB) it will not leak (i think it's a bug, idk) btw, i also tried this null test some time ago and ableton's saturator is not that transparent like gclip. if you increase the volume with utility after the null test you can hear some noise leaking

@@offsetemusic i’m glad you tested it! when i did it i heard nothing but could be the source and what was being “clipped”. Saturator still a good alternative for people who can’t get Gclip

Question: Soothe delays the bass channel by ~40ms, and You delayed certain bass channels by additional 27ms. What is the purpose of this added delay? Edit: You explain things really well, and I can't wait for the next video!
@mil3sperhour
Жыл бұрын
In riddim a lot of flows are characterized by their wonkyness and swingy flow. to make my bass flows more swanky I like to add a bit of delay to slightly offset the channel even if I have clips locked to the grid. this also is acting as a delay compensation due to some spectral processing I have on the bass which give it a smearing pre ring that I have to push around a little.

hey miles, great stuff 2 q: 1. what reverb would you recommend forsomeone who can't get hybrid reverb? 2. Do you arrange/mix with the clipper on the master on? thanks king much love
@mil3sperhour
Жыл бұрын
hybrid reverb is just a convolution reverb plug in, kilohearts' convolution is probably the second best but even just a regular small size reverb will work, I just really like the impulse. And yes I do everything with the clipper on, to protect my audio equipment but also because its how the final mix is gonna sound

it's sidechained too! anything with the routing that says sidechain (on the right side of ableton) is being routed through shaperbox

for layering basses and stuff, should you have each layer hitting around -12 LUF, or the group of sounds that make up the main bass overall hitting -12?

you are cracked. humble request, can you do one on reese bass? i can't get a good balance between the sub and the mids on mine, would love to know how you would approach that because its not like a stabby bass, its sustained so the perceived loudness would be different

Can I do this without Ozone? I made a riddim track and my waveform is so small compared to my reference track. Mine is already clipping. So I will re mix my song based on the drums. Can someone tell me how many lufs my kicks and claps should be?
@mil3sperhour
10 ай бұрын
ozone imager is actually free and i recommend it since its a really great tool for stereo imaging. as for lufs its really hard to say cause it just depends on the type of track you're referencing/going for. there isn't really a set lufs to hit for drums specifically to hit, clipping/distortion is up to taste.

I'm terminally afraid of the day I get good headphones, I got some cheap gaming ones right now and I really can't hear the small differences. I slap reverbs, mid/side eq's, compressors for punchy drums, ott all the effects on almost everything and it sounds decent for me but I'm afraid it creates bad artifacts that I can't hear and it sounds like dogwater on proper headphones
