Alyssa, more than likely what you were seeing was spawning carp. They tend to spawn in shallow water and will often cause a disturbance on the surface. The male chases the female around until she drops some eggs and then he frantically swims around fertalizing them as they descend towards the bottom. You are looking very pretty as usual.

@@sleepiehead Always ask questions when you need to. Yes,a Shakey head is similar to a jig head, but it will present your bait(finesse worm) vertically. Typically they will have a screw in bait holder. Hard bottoms are where you want to throw it. Try to use buoyant plastics when you can, they present better, but it isn't an absolute must. Take care. P.S. Shakey head presentation is perfect for a spinning combo.

When the spawn is depends on what state you are in. In wisconsin it is May-early June. Further south it is earlier and further north it is later. They go to shallow spots with low/no current and hard bottom. Surface water temp when bass start to spawn is around 60 degree and surface temp at end is around 80 degree. Bigger bass spawn first. They don't all spawn at the same time, you will always find pre/post spawn bass in certain spots during the whole spawning season.

Hi Alyssia, missed not seeing you last week but great having you back with us. What you were seeing was carp feeding on the bottom picking around the roots of the weeds. Worms and corn kernels would have worked under those conditions. The dragonfly lure was pretty good and you started working it properly as bugs in the water usually only move enough to cause ripples or an inch at a time at the most. During the summer fish will try to avoid the heat of the sun`s rays and will go deep if they can or else they will stay under lilly pads which is where you were fishing so you did great doing that. This would have been a good time to use flies with a spinning bubble and use terrestrial insects for fishing like the Quik-site beetle from Orvis or Rainey`s Dragonfly from Feather Craft, these are fly fishing companies that sell flies along with everything to do with flyfishing... don`t jump into flyfishing yet, stick with spinning until you have it mastered or you will become discouraged and that would be a shame. BTW a frog lure would have been great to try there as well... toss it right on the pads and let it set for a while, sometimes bass will swim over to the splash and look up for what made it and when they see the frog they attack charging right through the pads and scare the heck out of you. You`re doing great Alyssia, Peace and brother love to you and all.
@rwid71663

One thing you want to do is mimic the food. you did good for a second twitching the bait. but for way not long enough. Bass can be finicky and pretty smart. there may have been 15 or more fish looking at your lure. but the unnatural twitch for a second, then swimming like a fish didn't add up in the fish's mind. twitching stopping twitching on, and on. then like you said color. I never seen a white dragonfly. however, if there is larva in the water it would work. sun is it high or low fish don't like looking into brightness. Basically, fishing is just that fishing. it's not catching. to be catching you have to figure out what the fish want at any given moment. and that can change almost daily. Keep doing what you are doing be prepared to change tactics, colors, and basically run the gambit. until you find what works on this day. Most of all enjoy it.

Sometimes the fish don't cooperate with the weather. It's summer time, it's been hot, and right now the fish are boiling in the sun. The best chance to get something may either be right as the sun is starting to come up or after the sun has set. And dragonfly lures can work well. There are some really solid frog ones (like the Lunkerhunt one with the crazy legs so it looks like real frog...love that one). Even a mouse lure could work great around lillypads -- especially when at dusk or dawn. But right now if you want something that would get anything that's around there I'd suggest a classic jointed Rapala...probably a size 9 in black/silver. Treble hooks are annoying, but there's a good chance you'd get something to come after it. Hula Poppers or other poppers are great at attracting fish too. Plus they're really fun to work slow and see how loud you can make it go. At the end of the day it all comes down to whether or not the fish feel like going after anything. You'll definitely eventually get something with that dragonfly if you keep working it. You could also go as simple as possible and use a weightless ribbon tail worm. Some times the simplest thing works.
@LeviVanSluijs

Like a different comment said already those fish are likely common European carp and this is mating behaviour where I live they always go crazy in the spring and early summer. Catching them on lures is almost impossible because they aren’t predators the mainly eat plants, insects and other small creatures in the substate. You can catch them on worms, corn, bread and some other things they fight really hard and are fun to catch. A lot of people in the USA don’t like them because they are an invasive species.

Absolutely loved the vid. I would take a bad day of fishing in nature over a good day at work. I think that the dragonfly is meant to be twitched a lot to look like it's panicking. Also, when fish are spawning they can get locked on to there beds in the water and only want to protect there eggs. So you really have to make them mad to catch them. Putting the bait right omin the middle of there bed is how you get them to bite in those situations

It's about a 3 .50 . Funny thing the best is a gold bead head #8 black woolie bug. It weighs nothing . But I could still fing it with a mico reel ,a small push button reel. I also used it with a swivel for wait. A spots little ones you can always put two or whatever you need to cast. New line all the time. It catches bass, bluegill,sun fish , rock bass, crappie, trout, I even caught a cat fish I guess it smelled good from all the other fish. It also works on Pike and pickerel. Everything. You can always add a wooden float and stick a tooth pick to keep your bait just off the bottom. The wooden float gives you plenty of weight to cast flies. Or any ultra light lure.

The hour before and the hour after sunrise and sunset are the two best times for freshwater fishing during the summer. It matters less in the spring and fall with cooler temperatures but middle of the day during the hot days of summer can be very difficult, as fish shut down and move to deeper and cooler water levels until evening. Testing lures in one spot in the middle of the day during summer, may not give a true indication as to a lure's effectiveness. It's all about being at the right place at the right time.

Those dragonfly lures are great! I use them every year. They are way sturdier than you would think. A week ago, I was twitching one on the surface, and a real dragonfly kept buzzing around it, looking at it. VERY REALISTIC! It's a twitch and pause lure. So, use patience. The longer pauses can be very productive. See what the fish want twitching works, too. Not a gimmick lure! Hooks up better than frogs. Catches more than frogs when fish are skiddish about hitting the surface. But frogs are great, too. I get more hookups from a single hook frog with a wire weed guard. "The Superior Frog" by Panther Martin has a solid core body that is great. If fish aren't hitting surface, nothing can make them! Time to change lures. The dragonfly color shouldn't matter. the black body is good . WARNING: Never allow those dragonfly lures to touch a rubber worm. I was in a hurry, stuck one in a rubber worm pouch, and the foam body melted into goo! Bought a new one the next day (Amazon). A great productive lure!

you’ve added sone tricks to your editing style nice work on that have you seen the lunker hunt spider?? the thing to remember about these creature imitator type lures is that bass may or may not see them as those creatures at all what that means is to not restrict your action to only movements you think those creatures might do and use a variety of actions whether a “dragon fly” might move like that or not bass might eat them thinking they’re a crawfish or they might just bite them because they didn’t even know what the hell it was and they had a split second to react orrrrr it just pissed them off and they aggressively attacked it we don’t know what a bass really sees or interprets for our lures so we shouldn’t restrict ourselves!

@@sleepiehead Carp are omnivorous so they are like us and eat anything plant or animal. Corn has the same texture of lilly pad roots and carp eat not only the roots but the worms, bugs, and crayfish they find among the roots. Although carp are usually bottom feeders they will eat bugs that fall in the water. Some people make their own carp bait recipes that include corn, potatoes (cook the potatoes a bit to soften them), rice, oatmeal, and kneaded bread moistened with any kind of sweetener (honey, maple syrup, molasses, and vanilla) and you should be able to catch more carp than you could hope for. There are quite a few videos on carp fishing and they can teach you a lot, BTW carp fight extremely hard so be ready even if it looks small they fight much harder than bass and they are the main fish that are looked for in Europe, carp can grow over 50 lbs. though usually you will find them from 1 lbs. on up to 15 lbs. on average. i tried using a wooly bugger and a water bobber two days ago and it was hard to understand how to get the clear ones to hold water with the hole at the bottom lolol especially when the bank is up from the water! my im having trouble understanding how to retrieve wooly buggers with a spinning rod, could you perhaps provide some insight on that? i’m planning on using a fly rod soon but i do want to learn how to imitate a similar technique on a spinning rod if it’s possible. also, am i meant to completely dry the fly after each cast? i could only then some parts of it to dry between casts by trying to hold the line and whip the water off of it. is there a better method?

@@sleepiehead well sleepy head you could put water from your water bottle in your bobber .if you have the bubble that has a tapered pin heres what you do.the big end of the pin goes toward your hook run your line through the bubble and get a small swivel now by sliding the brass on the clip part of the swivel you can remove it from the swiveling part if you have the right size swivel you can just mash the eye a little bit and after tying your line on insert this end into the pin on the bobber .if done correctly your knot is now in the bobber and an empty eyelet sticking out this you tie your leader to and your fly on the end of your leader 3 to 5ft on the leader seems to work best and the swivel keeps your line from twisting up after repeated casts .now for the fly fishing head my advice I started long ago with a cheap rod from walmart and 2 lb tippers from eagle claw that were 40 yrs old and landed my biggest trout yet right about 5lbs in the 30yrs or so since after buying multiple rods every gadget imaginable a vest that always had way more shit in it than necessary and of course more stuff to lose learned how to tie flys and have yet to land a bigger fish than I did with the cheap stuff .so my advice I technique you can practice at a park or a nice lawn get a hula hoop for a target practice casting lots .for equipment seeing the fishing you do I would suggest a 5wieght rod it's a little heavy for panfish but can handle larger fish get a weight forward line dont get cheap on the line by a scientific angle or another quality line .in fly fishing the line propels your lure verses the lure pulling out your line .the rod if still available get a plueger summit or equivalent graphite rod dont spend over say 60 bucks on your first rod and dont be cajoled into buying every fly fishing gimmick some good clippers some hemostats for removing the fly and a couple of tapered leaders a roll of tippett material for when your leader gets short after repeated use you lose a couple of inches every time you tie on a fly .and yes with the application of floatant it looks like thick vaseline you can usually dry your fly with a few false casts and of course some flys float better than others deer hair flys float good .I would recommend a fly called a humpy it resembles many different bugs floats good it in what fly fisherman call attractor flys like the royal coachman. casting 10 to 2 wrist straight cast with your elbow after a while you can learn to use your wrist to cast when arm movements are limited .you seem to be a smart girl so do your research you might find a good starter kit at a reasonable price but I would buy rod reel and line separately like I said dont skimp on the line expect to pay up to 40 dollars for a good line .now I'm 62 year old Colorado native not very good on a computer but am aware that you need to be carefull talking to strangers but if you want I can give you my address or phone no I have enough fishing equipment to last forever and happen to have a brand new eagle claw rod in case extra reel and could hook you up with a box of flys I dont keep information on my phone for this very reason so I'd prefer that if you request .I assure you I'm not wierd or a stalker or anything like that so I'll leave it up to you!

Ps you pull out the tapered pin in the clear bubble and immerse it in water less than half full is usually adequate stick the pin back in trapping the water inside the bubble

After rereading you usually have to use a small split shot about a foot in front of your wooly bugger unless you buy a weighted fly by small I mean about bb size like a bb gun

if your lake is "turning" nothing will feed/bite. Let the lake continue its turning until it settles down. Some lakes can take awhile. Usually happens seasonally! ask your local pro shop what is going in in their area first before wasting so much time.

I've never seen that dragon fly lure before. I'm definitely going to get some. I'd go with a darker color though as fish are looking up so darker is easier to see above. I'd fish that a little more aggressively than you're doing. When dragon flies crash land in water they're wings flap a lot at first and make a lot of motion on the water. I'd try like short popping action then pauses. I think you're giving the fish too much time to take a good look at the bait to decide if it's real or not. Popping it will give you a reaction strike. Summer isn't the best time for top water lures though. Late spring and fall is the best for top water. However, during the summer there's a very small window EARLY EARLY in the morning that u can get some awesome top water action. Like literally start when it's still dark, up until about an hour after sunrise. I think those were carp. Fishing is very tough at this time of year. Believe me, you're not alone in getting skunked right now. Senko's and texas rigged 7.5" red shad worms around heavy structure like large downed trees are my go to for these hot days.

Sorry you didn't have any luck, sure was a beautiful place tho... There is a national forest reserve close to me with plenty of places to fish, I am going there this weekend and I always have the thought that if I don't have much luck with the fish I will still enjoy nature, it can be breath taken.

When nothing will bite on your lures, you can always flip a rock to look for a worm... I bet that one of those fish would've bite .

You tried that's the important part. . . . . When the fish are on the surface like that and out in the open they probably had a lot of different lures and baits thrown at them already

Watch bugs when they fall into water, make your bait act like that.

You need some over and under spinner baits. White, yellow, and black. Put a 3" or 4" swimbait on the hook. White or pearlized. Let's up your game!

Ally..they might be spawning there still. I see ur casting is improving 👍👍. Try a light color & dark color in lures. Try a wait & hold after splashdown for a few seconds then start ur movement, maybe Try walk the dog type of move with that lure.tite lines..Wayne

Young lady try walking the top water bait. It's a different action that attracts fish. 1. Cast. 2. Hold rod by your side and tug slightly. Just enough to watch the lure go side to side. 3. Real and repeat 2 and repeat. Watch utube vids in walking frogs. It's the same for all top water lures.
