History
Construction work started in 1805 from both ends and the basin was inaugurated in November 1825 by King Charles X.
Under the Second Empire, in 1859, Prefect Haussmann decided to cover the canal between place de la Bastille and avenue de la République, then up to Faubourg du Temple in 1906.
The canal
4,5 kilometre-long, connecting the basin de la Villette to the Port de l’Arsenal.
The canal was open for navigation all year long and was used to transport raw material and ship out finished products.
Port de l’Arsenal
It owes its name to an arsenal that stood near the basin between the 16th and 19th century.
Following the destruction of the Bastille, the harbour was dug out in place of the ditch that used to fill out the fortress’ moat with water from the Seine.
The harbour is about 600-metre long and was created at the same time as the canal Saint-Martin in the 19th century, enabling navigation of boats on the Seine.
Two metal bridges were built on both ends of the basin between 1879 and 1928.
The commercial harbour was replaced by a 177 berths marina in 1983 by mayor Jacques Chirac.
A ninth and last lock near the Seine allows boats to access the marina. Indeed, water level is 3m higher than the Seine. The lock was renovated and automated in 1983.
Concomitantly, the Morland bridge which stands atop this lock was broadened.
The Mornay walkway
This walkway was built in 1895 to connect both banks of the basin, between boulevard Bourdon and boulevard de la Bastille. It doesn’t appear in the city’s official nomenclatures.
Jardin de l’Arsenal
The jardin de l’Arsenal is a park which was created on the eastern bank of the basin, next to boulevard de la Bastille. A maple-filled terrace follows the port, along with an important collection of rising plants. This garden also features a sculpture by Henry Arnold.
