@@enocjordanabi4207 I think Glenn's much heavier than either of those two... Mardones even transposed his "Possenti Numi" (Isis und osiris) a step higher, while Glenn added a C1 which sounded even louder than all the other notes. It's not comparable. I'd say Glenn is a considerably lower and heavier voice, and he has even better technique. I'll grant you that his vibrato maybe could be more musical, but that's the only thing you could criticize. Maybe it's impossible to do it any other way with such a large voice. I'm pretty sure neither Neri nor Mardones could even touch a Bb1 with chest voice, let alone sing it so loud and strong.

That's right. Very few guys are basses. Basso profundos and oktavists are the rarest basses. There are also lots of guys who think they're basses but they're actually deep baritones. Basses have a heavier fuller timbre than baritones.

@DubiousDubs

Oktavist is a choral role not a voice type. It's usually sung by profundos (they are the lowest voice type), but oktavist cannot be considered a voice type because it is also commonly sung using extensions of the voice such as fry (Jason Thoms, Tuukka Haapaniemi) or subharmonics (Thou Yang). So yes, he is a Basso Profundo
@marioleb4079
Жыл бұрын
@@DubiousDubs the reason why they use subharmonics or fry is because they can't go that low in modal voice, but a true oktavist is able to hit and project first octave notes in chest voice with no problem, filling the room with a bass sound, maybe yes oktavist is not a voice type but for me the oktavist is a step below the Basso profundo, from what i've seen

@@DubiousDubs and about subharmonics and fry you will rarely find (if never) some guys in a choir going in the first octave with a filling bass sound all over the room
@DubiousDubs
Жыл бұрын
@Mario Leb I mean- is that not obvious? I feel like it was implied pretty heavily that I was saying that the oktavist role is often sung by people who don't have it in modal (or at least not with enough power. Why else would you use techniques? Also I find it disingenuous to label the ones using extensions as not true oktavists. They perform the role just as well, and it arguably takes more skill for them to do it than a profundo, because they're singing in a less familiar register AND have to effectively blend the different timbre of that register to the choir.
@DubiousDubs
Жыл бұрын
@Mario Leb and no, oktavist is not a step down from basso profundo, it's just that the scenarios in which they perform are different It takes more power to be heard in an opera than in a choir (this is due to harmonic lock- being perfectly in tune makes harmonics from different singers sort of "boost" the sound of the bass. Really cool psychoacoustics phenomenon). Because of this phenomenon, a profundo who would usually never venture below low C in opera, is able to perform much lower in a choir, and that's where we say it's an oktavist role. By the way, this view is shared by Thou Yang, Glenn Miller, and Eric Holloway just to name a few. Oktavist= choral profundo, or dude with really good low extensions like fry.

I think the short answer to your question is Glenn sings in his modal voice, or speaking voice. Geoff is using extended technique which isn't necessarily better or worse but producing such low notes with modal voice can be physically taxing and so I think a lot of low voices might look funny singing because they need to shape their faces in different ways to project well. But then again so do opera singers. Hope this helps.
