Love this interpretation. To add to what you said, I thought how when we make bad decisions, we want to start changing things about ourselves like our appearance. This is in order to not make the same bad decisions, but in turn, he's ending up right where he started?! I don't know.

My analysis: Dr Dan Bastille is keep selling a phone number to let everyone escape everything and stop making bad decisions. However, people who receive the number often ends up dead. Also, taking your idea, no matter what versions of us are experiencing, we would also inevitably make mistakes. So maybe the only way we can escape everything is by death. Therefore we should embrace our mistakes and try to improve instead of focusing in the past. Also, referring to the lyrics of the song 'so we'll make the same mistakes till the morning breaks', I think it means that after we make bad decisions that destroy us, if we encounter them by escaping such as by drinking, we would end up destroying ourselves again, and therefore make the same mistakes again. This, again, leads us to the conclusion above.

The video starts with the televised ad of a self-help programme that teaches how to “stop making mistakes” and “stay forever numb”. It’s followed by a chain reaction of the murders of different versions of the same person. What all these versions want is to find a way to “end the groundhog”, breaking the cycle of the repeated bad decisions. They thus believe that by killing off -what they think to be- their worst and evil versions, they can truly be themselves. However, this culminates in a crazy, numb and annihilated old man taking over the others - and empty shell of a man who’s become the real villain because he denied his counterparts, who -despite their flaws- constituted a complex and nuanced human being all together. Bottom line is: denying our mistakes, wanting to erase our bad decisions from our life and memories is not the key to flourish. Celebrating ourselves means embracing our flaws and knowing that they make us us, just as much as our virtues do. We all have shades of grey after all. (This is just my interpretation, and it could be absolutely wrong).
@sanderbrugmans6706
5 жыл бұрын
I like your explanation, but i dont think its true, after all: the first three Dans didnt want to 'end the groundhog' since they threw away the flyer. Only the fourth Dan actually goes to fortune teller Dan
@vexanavictoria4733
3 жыл бұрын
I would like to add some interpretation. The first two persona of Dan wanted to "end the ground hog" but the third persona just threw the flyer away because he thought that his third version of himself is much stronger than the two but still ended up doing foolish things (like threwing the flyer away) thus his fourth version of himself showed up and killed his third version of himself. The fourth version of himself who appears to be more mature and experienced still finds ways to "end the groundhog" thus seeking help from a fortune teller Dan which is his fifth version of himself. It's like the fourth version of Dan is reflecting from his bad decisions that were shown by fortune teller Dan through the cards. His reflection leads into a conclusion that his fourth version of himself is still a flaw thus killing his fourth version of himself.

quick vague interpretation: making a bad descion is generally a selfish act, therefore all the characters are Dan. We make these descions and then are upset with ourselves so we try to kill off little bits of who we are, trying to fix it, to feel better. but usually it's pointless and needlessly cruel.

Easter eggs I noticed: 1)The first clip with the man spilling coffee on himself seems to have a watermark of bad steel over it. 2) the beer bottle thrown by Danny through D's window was called "Bad Brew". 3) The sign outside the tarot card reader's trailer said stop making mistakes. Stop the groundhog - (assuming it is a Groundhog Day reference?). This is where it ends. Stay Forever Numb. Remember Everything. 4) Woody, Kyle, and Will seem to be wearing those tracksuits again. Another nod to the Royal Tenenbaums, same people, who shaved Dan's head in "QPM"? Any other one's you guys noticed?

From the vid and lyrics I would say that the song is about how we live in the moment and that takes aways from actually matters like the people around us. I also think it means we should not live our life's with regrets. It points we are all going to to die. " If we are going down in flames" death "think about the bad decisions" regrets. In all the song is about living in its full and enjoying it but making sure that we don't do that at others people's costs.

He actually sings "take a bow, for the bad decisions that we made" and not "think about, all the bad decisions that we made". I thought it was the latter too at first 😅

To me this represents all the alter egos and visages we put up during the day/on nights out and how they are never permanent but reproduce with the same theme, one follows on from another and in time just like memories of the night, they disappear.

I genuinely want to see Dan as an actor in an eerie movie. Either full on horror film or a subtle calm but creepy film.

After i discovered this video yesterday i think I've figured out what the meaning is after a few hours of watching it, okay so Doctor Dan is 1st seen proposing his book "BAD DECISIONS"then quickly the shot pans out and we see that he has had it relatively ruff possibly( the book didn't sell well). When Doctor Dan is eating away his sorrows he notices on the table a tarot reading place this upsets him as hindsight is as good as useless to Doctor Dan who in a fit of rage and hopelessness lashes out at Danny and looses his life over it. While Danny has just committed an act of murder he takes the tarot reading card to possibly see his future outcomes and after work goes drinking to relieve stress and possible emotional damage of just killing a man @1:17 that's what we see him doing hes focusing/celebrating on himself and escaping the scene of the indecent Danny then tosses the beer bottle through the passenger side window of D's car but right before that we see the words "BOTTLE YOUR FEELINGS" and that in a sense is what D has done he had no way of coping with the loss of his window in a healthy way so he vented his frustration via killing Danny, D picks up the card and crumples it up and tosses it possibly because he thinks he is the master of his own fate or he believe that its nonsense. As D is ready to drive off Daniel shows up to pick up the card and then kill D to head on over to this tarot reader. Mr. Reader shows the previous men to Daniel and we see him start to drool over Doctor Dan (more on that in a bit) then once the reader gets to Daniel and they both chuckle as Daniel is killed by the Reader. What all this means is in the literal sense of seeing yourself in other people Doctor Dan is the only real person in this with Danny D and Daniel being different versions of Doctor Dan. Usually we think of diners as an entry level job so Danny is the Doctors youthful life D is is the inner rage and Daniel is the hindsight 20/20 kind of wise self that has done lots of self reflecting that's why Daniel salivates over Doctor Dan because he has all the knowledge that Doctor Dan wanted at the time That's how i see it

It's so interesting to watch your progress :D I've found you guys about five years ago (I think) when I was twelve. The first song I heard was Pompeii (I had read the Percy Jackson books an was full into greek and rome. I wondered how the People feeled when they realized, that they will die. (and much more, but thats a long story). Then I listened to your song so many times. I closed my eyes an let my imagination do the rest. Your music opend a whole new point of view to me. Then came other songs. Things we lost in the fire, daniel in the dan, icarus, lethargy, what would you do ... And now, a few years later (I never stopped listening) I am here. Grown. Full of new memories and emotions and an bigger mindset. And you are here. Grown. Full of new memories and emotions and merlins beard... I love you guys. Thank you for coming into my life and putting your music into my heart. Love, Julia (And greetings from germany 😊)

Dan, is it just me or the character D was actually inspired by russian rave culture in the 90’s?
