QUICK FACTS
Habitats:
Bats are found on every continent except Antarctica. Different species inhabit a variety of habitats, including deserts, grasslands, forests, urban areas, and caves. Many bats roost in caves, trees, rock crevices, and man-made structures during the day.
Diet:
Most bats are insectivores and feed on insects such as moths, beetles, and mosquitoes. Some species are frugivores and eat fruits, nectar, and pollen. A few species are carnivorous and prey on small vertebrates like frogs, fish, and other bats.
Size:
Bats range greatly in size. The smallest bat is the bumblebee bat, which is only 1.1-1.3 inches (3-3.5 cm) long and weighs just 0.05-0.07 ounces (2-3 grams). The largest bats are flying foxes, with some species having wingspans over 5 feet (1.5 meters).
Life Span:
Most bats live longer than similarly sized mammals. Small insectivorous bats may live 5-10 years, while larger fruit bats can live over 30 years in the wild.
Predators:
Common predators of bats include hawks, owls, snakes, raccoons, and cats. Their main defense is to roost in sheltered areas during the day when most predators are active. Some larger bats have few natural predators besides humans.
