It was absolutely crazy. I worked in a store back then and the amount of merch we had was INSANE. Warner Brothers couldn't keep up with the demand. There is an interesting mini documentary about a small company called Toy Biz that made the original 89 action figures instead of Kenner. They couldn't handle the demand; they couldn't get Michael Keaton's face right on the figure; and were just overwhelmed leading to the retail shortage. They went out of business and Kenner came crawling back and they did the much better figures starting in 1990, I believe.

12:21 Actually during production, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton had to read not only Dark Knight and Killing Joke while the other had to read the Silver Age comic, but the two also had to read the original early 30s comics when he (at the time) killed his criminals, and Bob Kane suggested Burton to make Batman kill a few of his criminals in order to reflect that vintage version he and (mostly) Bill Finger originally intended the character and stray FAR as they could to Adam West's version. Also, it was Michael Keaton's idea to hang upside down. Not Burton. So, you would die if you do that Mr. Keaton. 🤣
@kazinadbiralamadit6905

Actually Bill Finger hated the idea of Bruce/Batman killing, when DC editorial suggested Batman stop killing criminals he jumped on the idea & encouraged it. Also he really loved the Adam west show, mostly because of the fact it was the first time he was publicly credited with a Batman property. Also had it not been for the series Bill would have lost the official writing Job he had for Batman comics at the time. Bob kane used all of his powers & connections to stop Finger to be credited. Finger didn't want royalties or any compensation for Batman he just wanted to be credited.

Watching Batman ‘89 and Returns throughout the years of my life, I’ve come to the realization that it works….Tim Burton’s Batman is heroic, yes, but he is a heroic villain. Where Deadpool, Red Hood, and Wolverine are seen as ANTI-Heroes; Burton’s Batman can be perceived as an ANTI-villain….he’s hypocritical, paranoid, angry, vengeful, and kills without remorse. But, for some reason it works for me…Did anyone notice how Batman DOES NOT kill until his embedded memories visit him in a brooding session and he realizes Joker killed his parents? It seems like a lazy idea to have that plot point, but now it seems genius. To have that personal connection makes you understand why Batman is so crazy. Why he kills. He is a Batman defined by revenge, and it blinds him. This causes him to kill every Joker goon and drive him up the tower to kill the man who brought him endless pain. To kill the man who killed his parents. And what makes this work is the subtlety, the realism. He can’t stop. He crossed that path that Bruce told Jason of at the end of Under The Red Hood. He lost himself. So he keeps killing people in Returns, this time without any feeling. They are obstacles in his way to killing another freak who is defined by that parental pain and isolation, Oswald Cobblepot. The Triangle Circus Gang could almost be his Alfred, his family. And this makes Batman a hypocrite, he loves that Gordon doesn’t only not care about his murders, but endorses them. Batman is a villain. Batman is defined by revenge.
@JoshuaRLaBelle
2 жыл бұрын
I also feel that the Tim Burtons movies are very focused not on Batman himself, but on the effect he has on the people in his world. If you focus, Batman and Batman Returns have a subtle three person POV throughout the three acts. First Act is from the point of view of Joker and Penguin, then Second act is Vale and Selina, and then the third act is both Keaton. I feel that Returns is great because the ending redeems his first film. Where he was trying to kill the Joker, he now tries to save Selina. Why? Because she is becoming that Anti-Hero defined by revenge.

As much as I like this first movie, I remember the first time watching it thinking to myself, "Wow, that was grea- wait a minute...doesn't Batman have a 'no killing' rule? It's one of the reasons that I like him so much, because he is able to be a badass without taking any lives. He just beats the s#%t out of criminals while dressed up as a giant bat. So why did he just kill about a dozen people in this movie?". I remember being really confused about that but Jack Nicholson's portrayal of Joker was more than enough to make up for it (almost). We should also bare in mind that when Batman first started out in the comics the 'no killing' rule wasn't really a thing just yet. The earliest mention of it was in Batman #4 (December 1940) when he reminded Robin (Dick Grayson) of the rule, " We never kill with weapons of any kind", this coming after a whole year of killing criminals...with weapons of all kinds...including guns (remember, Batman first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939). It should also be noted that Tim Burton took direct inspiration from his favorite Batman comic, and also one of mine, The Killing Joke for Jokers' origin in the movie. By comparison that scene (Jack Napier falling into the chemicals and initially becoming The Joker) in the comic and the movie are almost identical.
@yogenz

Batman wasn't sleeping upside down. You can see his arms move and in the next scene you see him getting woken up on a chair, not hanging upside down. It's like 3 am (whatever the clock said) he'd rather be out there as Batman. Instead now he's in his room with Vicki. The man's bored out of his mind, hence him hanging. Oh and the character development, while it doesn't happen here, he actually does learn from killing Joker. That's why in Forever he tells Robin not kill Two-Face because it won't help, then he took the liberty of doing the deed for Robin.

11:00 unless she's Catwoman or the member of an evil organization that has access to specific green pit. Edit: as for what I thought of the movie after reading the first few issues of the Batman comic Batman 89 is that the Tim Burton Batman movies were about the villains than the hero. In fact when you look at Batman the animated series there are in fact episodes that focus on how so and so became this character. That said I absolutely cannot wait for your thoughts on Bat nipples and The credit card adventures featuring Ice puns.

3C Films, Did the Adam West Batman film play in theaters when it came out? If so you missed that one if you're going in order.

Batman 1989 is amazing and an absolute classic. And I was born in 2007 so I can't imagine how loved it must be if you watched it when it originally released. Batman 1989 and Batman Returns are easily the best Batman movies excluding Christopher Nolan's (obviously).

11:30 Definitely agree. It was always so annoying how many people praised Christian Bale's Batman for the no killing rule and how he's the golden standard of his Batman not killing anyone, and all the criticism going to Ben Affleck's Batman killing people. So apparently all those individuals forgot that until Robert Pattinson, literally every live action Batman killed people including Christian Bale's Batman.

Just watched Batman last night and its stil great. Jack is still my "Number One Guy" when it comes to Joker. Keaton is great. For me the first is still the best.

I absolutely loved this review as it gives a really nice deep dive into both the positives and the negatives about this movie and I'm seriously looking forward to the rest! I do wish we could have gotten a review for the 1966 Batman movie as it did have a theatrical release but oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Keaton's Batman was perfect because his persona, his attitude was incredible. He was all class on the outside hiding a wild-eyed nutcase interior.
