In 1989, you couldn't turn on the television without seeing a story about the upcoming Tim Burton film, Batman. Today, we have become accustomed to the media blitz and merchandising madness that surrounds the release of a new mega-movie, but back then, this was really a new thing.

Yes, Star Wars came long before it and was a huge success, which also featured a wildly successful merchandising line. The key difference is that with Star Wars, nobody expected it. With Batman, it was generated. It was contrived. They forced mega merchandising down the throats of the unsuspecting public, and the bat symbol was everywhere.
