The best line in this scene is "You shouldn't turned the gun on the kid man-you shouldn't have turned that gun on that kid!" I know for a fact that criminal is not saying that out of conscience. He's got no problem with turning guns on children. But he is SO scared of this "Bat" that he's treating him like an angry all-seeing Old Testament God. It's like he's thinking "Look, I do bad things but I don't want to do something TOO bad...it might anger the big man upstairs." Except in this case the "big man up stairs" isn't God-It's Batman. That's how entrenched Batman is the mind of criminals-he's given them all conscience, if only to avoid his wrath. All of this is summed up in one line from a nameless criminal.

Whenever I used to watch this scene, for some reason the way Batman was portrayed used to remind me of Michael Myers from the Halloween. The way he slowly and calmly approaches the bad guys, doesn't say anything or show any emotion, gets shot down but then bushes it off like it's nothing and rises back from the ground like he's undead. It really reminded me of Michael Myers and wouldn't surprise me if Tim Burton took some inspiration from the Halloween movies when making this scene.

Anyone who thinks Keaton's batman is a pushover because he got shot and knocked down by some common thugs doesn't understand he purposely did that. Totally agree. Nolan seemed to have this view that in order to have the character believable you need to take away that aspect. Yet, for me, it’s the opposite. He’s dressed as a BAT. The whole point of the outfit is to intimidate and be theatrical. In Nolan’s films they might as well have replaced the bat ears with just a military helmet. Bale’s shouting didn’t help. The suit was supposed to do the talking. The character has a gothic/‘creature of the night’ element to it (bats=Dracula), it’s undeniable, and if you stray away from that too much (which I think Nolan and Bale did) it will inevitably come accross as a bit strange. I enjoyed Affleck’s Batman more than Bale’s. The TDK are well-made films, don’t get me wrong, and I quite like Rises. But Keaton’s portrayal in this one, and Burton’s Gotham City, is still the definitive version

I always found it a little unfair that the street thug with a conscious and who barely did anything wrong gets it worse than the street thug who didn't care about what he did. I mean, thug number 1 didn't really do anything to rob the family, wasn't armed at all, believed Batman was real, and actually felt bad for mugging them and wanted to leave the rooftop out of fear. And in the end, he gets kicked through a door and is brutilised badly by Batman. Meanwhile, thug number 2 was armed with a gun, knocked out the father, threatened the mother with the gun before taking the money, felt no guilt, didn't believe Batman was real, and didn't hesititate to shoot Batman on sight to kill him. But barely anything bad happens to him. Instead, he's just held off the edge of the rooftop and is then thrown back on the roof only maybe traumitized.

For the people who wonder why Batman didn't intervene when the family was getting mugged: according to the script for the film he was standing on top the Gotham cathedral watching over the city while the mugging happened, and it wasn't after he hears the the women's scream he left to see what happened. He didn't "watch" the family get mugged, you even see after he hears the screaming that he moves to investigate.
