Blueman 89 on 4K as i call it due to the blue tone that is soaked into this release. Not sure im a fan of the new sound effects either. Im too used to how the movie sounded growing up with it as a kid when it came out.

Great breakdown of Batman 1989. One of my favorites in the Batman series. Michael Keaton is great. Jack Nicklson is a perfect Joker. My classic lines. Princes music is fantastic. A great cast. I’ve watched it many times. Thanks Rob for the review. Worth getting on 4K.

I remember first hearing about it in 1989. I was skeptical at first. Then I saw it and it was incredible. Even more so given at had zero CGI and managed to be visually incredible.

I'm with you on that. The cinematography by British cameraman Roger Pratt is the best he's ever done. I did go to see the new The Batman at the cinema, and found some scenes so bloody dark, in terms of lighting, that at times I couldn't even see what was going on. Whereas Batman 89 has very distinctive and notable lighting that gives you a clear impression of the environment of Gotham, without compromising on making the film so bloody dark you can't see what the f is going on. I do think that standards in cinematography has slipped significantly over the many years. I do prefer Burton's take on Bob Kane's comic book creation. The set design feels more in tune with what Kane had in mind for Gotham. And Nicholson is the Joker. Nicholson was totally off the rails in The Shining, but plays the Joker with such conviction, that you almost forget its Nicholson playing the Joker. The Bat suit does look very stiff in Batman 1989, but saying that, it's still a great, robust piece of costume design. No other Batman film has had a score like Elfman's. Every part of that score fits that film beautifully. If The Batman needed a score, then that's the score it would luv to have. Seeing that film, Batman 89 was a thrilling experience in the cinema back in 1989. A great year for action films.

Pratt’s cinematography is amazing. How Gotham is lit, Bruce’s home, the Batcave, and Batman himself, it’s all so impressive. I also love how he shot the exterior scenes. There’s an overcast every day in Gotham City and that’s something you can’t replicate by shooting inside on a sound stage. The cinematography in Returns is gorgeous as well, but the look they were going for in the 89 film is perfect. Imo Pratt and Elfman were snubbed at the Oscars that year. They both deserved nominations.

This 4k does look good in terms of detail but is not entirely reflective of the original look of the film. The scenes within Vikki's apartment, Wayne Manor and most of the brighter scenes within offices are all fine and very warm. The only complaint there is skin tones being orange. The darker scenes however have a teal-like filter put on them. It's most noticeable during the parade scene. Check out the shot of the two guys jumping onto the car. The bat signal is teal. This movie should mostly look blue-black. They should have just scanned the negative and left it. I don't have a problem with the new sound effects but they are a tad louder than the overall mix.

The redone SFX were off putting to me the first time I watched the 4K version but they've grown on me with subsequent viewings. What I don't like is the teal color during the night scenes. There's just something wrong with it compared to how the film originally looked. If you combined a legit 4K scan of the negative without the color correction and the redone SFX with the option of the original mix then you would have the perfect version of this film IMO.

I think the 4K is the first home video release to accurately depict how this film was intended to look. Each prior release has brightened up the picture. For example on the 2009 Blu-Ray it’s so bright that you can see someones hand driving the Batmobile even though it’s supposed to be driven remotely. The 4K restores the original look to the point that you can’t see things like that. Shame about the audio though. The best version of this film is on HBO Max. It has the new transfer as well as the original theatrical audio. Hope to eventually get that version on a disc.

Yes this was my favorite thing about this transfer and Returns- they finally brought it back to the proper darker look of the film. I think all the previous home video transfers were brightened up as a result from complaints that people thought it was too dark in the theater. Granted I can’t remember my theatrical experience but maybe it was due to some theaters projectors being too dim? Dunno, but it looks phenomenal on my OLED tv

Great review! I'm a fan of Batman and I've got Batman and Batman on 4k and you were right about the picture quality plus I've bought the movies a few times over 30 years but I never watched them at the cinema because I had a bad experience with super hero movies after Superman 4 and I'm still not mad on Batman forever and Batman and Robin but the 1960s TV series is still good especially on Blu-ray.

Love this 4K disc and yes imho it's the best Batman film. I just personally feel it's the most consistent of all the Batman films. Burton knocked it out of the park. (And his style was toned down just enough, compared to Batman Returns) The remastered audio mix issue, wrt the gunshots.... I definitely noticed it but tbh I like the new sfx better lol. Jmo.

One of the most important things about this release was the tempering of the audio. I still don't understand how can these kind of things get approved? If they felt the audio was cheap or bad, then release it with the option of an audio track with the original audio mix. Also they put a teal filter, did they consult this with Tim Burton? Hope we can get an original/untouched version on 4K one day, but i am still waiting for the Star Wars ones......... 🤷🏻♂
