I’m mixed on how Batman ‘89 handles Joker’s origin/connection to Bruce Wayne, but I do like how they establish that Jack was always kind of a dick even before he fell into the acid. Especially since Joker’s always going on about his whole “one bad day” ideology and how it’s the reason why he became what he is now, so it’s refreshing to have a piece of media that just goes, “oh yeah no he was always like that, the acid just gave him an excuse to be even worse.”

The interesting thing about Val Kilmers Batman is that there’s a lot of deleted dialogue that suggests he has killed before. There’s deleted Two-Face dialogue of him laughing at the idea that Batman “doesn’t kill.” There’s also a really cool deleted scene of Bruce having an internal monologue with himself, and he realizes that he doesn’t know who he is anymore, because both his Bruce and Batman personality’s have melted into one, which is why the director chose to include Two- Face in the movie. Classic split personality villain. My theory is that in the early drafts of Batman Forever, we were gonna start with a Batman who has kinda lost his way, and the movie was gonna be about him trying to find out who he is and who he used to be before he went down a dark path. But then Warner Bros just cut out this amazing subplot for no fucking reason. You can watch the deleted scenes on KZitem tho.
@richardlandgraf1953
9 ай бұрын
There is a version of the script with those scenes online and there is a video on KZitem by Hitop films that goes over the movie as it is VS what the director wanted to make and it goes over those scenes and that version of the character. I fully believe that this is supposed to be the same Bruce Wayne as Keaton, it was originally going to be another Burton sequel with Keaton, but they both walked away because of how much control the studio wanted.
@dungusglumbus9946
9 ай бұрын
@@richardlandgraf1953 that would make sense. Because Kenton’s Batman killed all the time. Perhaps in the early drafts of the script, the people of Gotham were getting fed up with Batman running around every night killing people, and maybe there was gonna be a subplot about Batman trying to go back to being a hero who doesn’t kill. That would’ve been very interesting. Personally, Kevin Conroy is my ideal Batman, and I think Batman should never kill. Batman is the guy who not only doesn’t kill, but actually saves his villains, even though they were just trying to kill him 5 mins ago. I hope Robert Pattinson Batman does some cool shot like that

@@trika91 True. Sigh. The Gothic-style cinematography, Danny Elfman's haunting score, and Jack Nicholson's iconic Joker performance left an indelible mark on me that has stayed with me to this day. And when Michael Keaton emerged from the shadows as Bruce Wayne/Batman, it was nothing short of breathtaking. Honestly glad to see someone acknowledge that Nicholson's Joker is arguably more dangerous and darker than Ledger's; I will wholly accept that the latter gives a better performance overall, but nothing from Ledger straddles the line of 'dark' and 'hilarious' as the 'I'm glad you're dead!' bit from '89. I also appreciate that '89's Joker isn't locked into the typical Batman/Joker stories we get these days, where Joker's cruelty is neverendingly escalating to try and get Batman to snap and Batman just goes 'Hrrn' and throws him back into Arkham. Nicholson's Joker doesn't give a *shit* about Batman beyond the fact he's stealing his spotlight, and it's pretty refreshing these days.
@windowsVD
9 ай бұрын
He said "more chaotic" in reference to his mannerisms, nothing about being "darker and more dangerous." Which one is more dangerous is debatable, as both rack up a pretty high body count and do a lot of damage to Gotham city. Ledger was far more manipulative and cunning, but Nicholson was arguably more "evil" as he seemed to just kill for the fun of it, whereas Ledger had a specific philosophical agenda that he wanted to prove. However, Ledger definitely takes the spot for the darker Joker, with the reason being that he actually succeeded in harming and killing main characters. Nicholson only killed a bunch of minor side characters, whereas Ledger killed Rachel and psychologically destroyed Harvey Dent, turning him into the disfigured Two-Face. Then he forced Batman into becoming a political martyr for Gotham in a desperate resort to maintain peace. The actions of Ledger's Joker simply had bigger and deadlier consequences for the main characters. To me, that leaves a much bigger impact than Nicholson saying an evil line to a fake looking skeleton, making him the "darker" Joker.
@najadamu2724

So they paid out BDW's three film contract. They ended up doing the same thing after Damon Wayans was cast as Robin. If I had a nickel for every movie which depicted Catwoman as gaining magical resurrection powers from an army of supernatural cats, I would have two nickels. Which…I mean, you know the rest of the quote, I don’t have to explain myself.

Seeing you speak so fondly about Batman Forever makes my heart sing! It's such an iconic ride and most likely influenced my love of color palettes. Seeing Jim Carrey return as a villain in Sonic 2 also drummed up all of those Riddler vibes. 😂❤

Watching the 89 Batman noir version where it's recolored to black and white, it feels totally different. Burton's understanding of German expressionism and gothic horror of early film is perfectly translated to his first Batman film. Only problem is the museum scene doesn't work without color and Prince feels out of place when the other shots look straight out of The Maltese Falcon.

Been missing him a lot lately and this brought back a lot of good memories. Been a fan for years since stumbling on your channel trying to research the soviet space program, I dont even like marvel movies lmao. You're a funny guy and this video is special to me, thank you. Go play more EDH with the Professor. Edit: also batman is a criminal and Wayne Industries is responsible for the tragedy in Gotham City to begin with.

To be frank, Burton's Batman movies do have a black character - Harvey Dent, who, originally, was always portrayed as a white guy in the comics. Kind of a bold casting choice for it's time.

I mean, I get that some people don't like the camp of Batman Forever. What I don't understand is how they don't appreciate how gorgeous that movie is. It's still used as a partial inspiration for the aesthetic of the Lego Batman games/movie as well as the the Arkham series and some of the comics. I get that the movie itself was also inspired by the aesthetic of some of the comics but it's cool how it all comes full circle.
