The beautiful irony is that Grant Morrison DID change Batman in a permanent way. Even though they "put the toys back in the box" when they were done, the character of Damian Wayne has become a part of the eternal batman mythology. It's not the first time a writer has tried the "superhero has a kid" idea, but it's one of the very very few to stick. And that's even with DC editorial de-aging batman as part of New 52.

This has been touched on time and time again, but the best thing about Morrison’s Batman is the mission statement: Everything Batman is part of Batman. There’s no “wrong” version. It all counts. And that’s an ethos that I wish more people would adopt. Anyway, still to this day theirs is my favorite run on the character.

I’ve been rethinking how I viewed Grant Morrison’s Batman run ever since Patrick Willems’ video on learning to appreciate Schumacher’s Batman. At first I was confused but then after re reading and finishing the run, it started to make sense: All of Batman’s history matters. While their run doesn’t end happy and addresses the problems of Bruce’s quest to make life better, Morrison shows the various sides of the character that most writers don’t even think about. Even though the New 52 really screwed up with continuity, I’m glad Morrison was able to finish their story. What a great way to begin 2021. Hope you’re doing well Matt and I’m excited for what’s in store next. P.S. I love Bat-Cow

And like Talia Darkseid's an awful parent. He keeps trying to kill his son Orion, kills his other son Kalibak whenever he fails him and resurrects him when he needs him only because Kalibak's his son with Suli, the only woman Darkseid ever loved. Kalibak's constant resurrections are the closest thing to fatherly love he gets from Darkseid.

I wonder why no one mentions that Talia drudged Bruce and conceived Damian without his consent. Like Bruce knew he wasn't ready or could be a father as Batman and expected to die young, but she tries to force him out of it and throws her own child into the mix. Bruce did not destroy Talia, Talia destroyed herself, Bruce did everything to keep her away from him, but she took him in a moment of weakness and threw the monkey wrench that was Damian into the mix. Also, Perseus killed Medusa under the order of the gods as a means to free his own mother from falling into slavery. He had no choice in the mater, he did not have the power to fight the gods themselves, and dying in some grand confrontation with Athena for her actions in creating Medusa would have been futile and would have doomed his home.

as far as i’m aware, the reason people don’t talk about the talia-bruce rape situation more often is because of how often it’s been changed, misremembered, and retconned from author to author

What I really found sad about the final leg of Morrison's run is that he stopped doing the "behind the scenes" commentary sections on the back of collected editions; something he had started in Batman & Robin and ended with the first volume of Batman Inc. In those, he talked excitedly about the thought that went into the characters, their costumes, their redesigns, and even background elements that only have passing mention. In the New52 Batman Inc graphic novels, there's none of that. Maybe he was just rundown by Flashpoint and all the other Events that kept interrupting his story. Who can say. But it's a shame.

I love Morrison’s run, I started reading comics when Dick became Batman. And Damien became My Robin. Which is why I was conflicted when Dick went back as Nightwing and Damien died. I get what Morrison was going for and for that story I think it worked, but he and other writers made me love Damien so I had no issue when he came back (as all conics characters tend to do) ... I think How he came back was odd and kinda bleh but I was glad he got brought back and he was used in a lot of neat stories after his return.

Jessie Christian This is Morrison taking Batman to the absolute peak of who can be. If the previous phases are Morrison’s commentary on Batman being the culmination of decades of non-powered vigilante characters, this is them taking the character and having him fight the Idea of Crime. Fighting the idea of thing that took his parents away from him. I didn’t like this run nearly as much as the first two phases (mostly cause Bruce feels like he’s Doing a bad Iron Man impression), but it definitely works for what Morrison was trying to say, the idea of Batman never dies is both a blessing and a curse to Bruce Wayne, the hole is endless, a bottomless pit where Batman will always be in the comic sense. Also thank you for getting Morrison’s pronouns correct, and great videos!!

I actually finally got around to Batman Inc a month or so ago, on DC Universe, and I really enjoyed it. I don't think the pacing was as tight as the previous parts of his run, but it was still fun. The art was great though, minus the digital issue of course. My favorite Morrison Batman story is not even apart of this run, even though The Island of Mister Mayhew and Batman and Robin are up there (minus the Red Hood arc, as you said). My favorite Morrison Batman story is Arkham Asylum. As for comparing it to other runs, it's definitely up there as one of my favorites. I think I still prefer Greg Rucka's tenure on Detective post-No Man's Land a bit more, but Morrison's is still great. I've kind of fallen out of love with Snyder's run recently. The only story I can regularly go back to is the initial Court of Owls story. The rest, I feel, is too drawn out, especially Zero Year.

When Morrison is on-point he may very well be the best writer in the business - certainly one of the most creative. When he isn't though, he can be downright incomprehensible. Morrison can be hard to follow. More often than not, there are multiple layers of themes, metaphors, symbolism, references, messages, etc. waiting to be unraveled through discussion and re-reads. This adds depth and value to what could otherwise be relatively straightforward, predictable, mediocre, and/or disposable stories that already comprise 90% of the comic market. Ultimately, I just can't help but appreciate that he has a defined, unique voice, style, ideas, beliefs, and a deep love for comics that he uses to create some genuinely boundary-pushing and refreshing stories for fans.
@johnathonhaney8291

One thing I've noticed is that writing superheroes grounds Morrison's work while most of his non-superhero work too often flies off the rails. There is something about superheroes that just brings out the best in Morrison. Without them, he gets self-indulgent and so in love with his big ideas that he forgets to tell an interesting story.

@@ankityadav5184 Ugh, sorry, Invisibles was Morrison at his most pretentious in my view. It didn't help that he rather stupidly claimed that the Wachowskis had ripped off The Matrix from it (which, given how Invisibles collapsed twice before he could finish it, says much). WE3 was passable and I refuse to bother with Filth. My only favored non-superhero work by Morrison is Sebastian O with Steve Yeowell, best steampunk story made to date.
@ankityadav5184
3 жыл бұрын
@@johnathonhaney8291 Yeah a lot of people feel that way about Invisibles. You have to have a very open mind going in, but if you suspend your disbelief and really take in what Morrison’s saying, you’re gonna love it. It's not for everybody, but if "extremely weird" is not your thing, it will NOT be your thing. Although I admit towards the middle(around the third arc) it gets a little sluggish and too meta for its own good and I feel he didn't stick the landing as well as he could have, but still I love it overall. On the topic of Matrix issue, yeah you are right and I don't really see any solid connections here other than that they're both very postmodern and counter-culture focused. It does take some elements from the comic like the quasi-transgender character Switch, the name cypher, the blue "substance", the leap of faith, etc. but that is where the similarities end.

Although I adore Morrison's run and really do enjoy sinking my teeth into his headier concepts, it isn't without it's issues. While the meta-narrative is dense and rewarding I think on a surface level the plotting is rather cryptic and the moment to moment narrative can suffer. When Morrison strikes the balance between the two - primarily in Batman & Robin and New 52 Batman Inc. it can be some of the best Batman around. Conversely there are times around end of Batman & Son, Batman R.I.P and ROTBW, while dense and layered, completely lost me upon initial reading.

Loved your Morrison run series. I really like your take as to why Bruce is an absent father. I never really digged that in Incorporated, and felt like Tomasi's run was good complement to that. I, though, love, love, love the grieving issue in Incorporated, and the Heretic fight is glorious. Continuing on to the Batman as a father issue, idk about your whole take on Tomasi's run, but I think Damian's ressurection stands as a second chance for Bruce in this regard. Because if you put both runs together, Bruce may have failed, but he tried really hard. Damian coming back is Batman and Damian coming to terms with each other and giving each other this second chance to start over and reconciliate as Father and Son, Batman and Robin. Plus The Hunt For Robin is an arc that really touched my heart. I think my only drawbacks about Incorporated were the Talia behind the black glove and the kinda rushed ending. Oh and btw the Damian future Batman being a kinda Days of Future Past/Rock of Ages timeline, in which Bruce needs to avoid, but, different than these other stories, saving Gotham comes with a price. Also, never really caught that reference in which Bruce, like RIP, is getting out of a trap, but in a tragic way, not a triumphant one. Nice analysis. PS: My favorite Grant Morrison Batman story has to be RIP, but Incorporated and Batman and Robin are not far behind. My top 3 is very close to each other. If I am to be honest, I change the placements here and there every re-read or couple of months lmao.

Thanks for this analysis. Good stuff. Batman Inc is my least favourite act in Morrison's run. It was too cynical and brutal for my tastes. I didn't really buy the emergence of Talia and Kathy Kane as key players in the saga, their retroactive insertion into the drama of the first two acts seemed very forced and didn't really work for me. A flawed, but decent effort to wrap things up by Morrison.

I'm almost wondering if Morrison is channeling a warning that Jung once gave about archetypes. People have a really terrible habit of identifying too much with a fictional character, a mythic figure and other archetypal spinoffs. It's terrible because all of these archetypes have predetermined endings if the "possessed" follow that path for too long. As you implied, that applies to anybody who identifies with Batman too closely. Oh and Final Crisis, for all its faults, is the moment I forgave Grant Morrison, mostly for its tie-in spinoff Superman Forever. But that's me.

For all his brilliance in writing, Grant Morrison suffers from the flaw of most writers of his caliber. They really don't get heroes, while fans love them.

looking back, i think Final Crisis is Morrison’s only misstep in the series. it’s only purpose was to kill batman for a more interesting story, and i think the way Darkseid is reborn didn’t work for me? I need to reread it again but maybe that’s just me.

Final Crisis actually worked for me on the grounds that it did something different with the New Gods (which Morrison has a major fetish for). In particular, he emphasized Kirby's original conception of Darkseid as a moral corruptor and expanded that concept to the rest of his underlings.

I loved his run so much. His latest GL run isn't as good which makes me sad.

I love how Grant turns Batman into Batgod and then into Batshit the second he gets bored of him.

Point of interjection here, Matt. The Ouroboros is a Norse symbol, not Greek.
