Originally, the production crew hadn't reached out to Frank Miller for approval on their homage. "It was actually Paul Levitz who found out that we were doing the episode and said, 'You'd better call Frank,' cause they like to keep him happy," noted Timm. "Sure enough, I had to make that phone call, but he was all for it." "He was like, 'Yeah, go for it. I'm curious to see how it's going to come out.' That was his one stipulation, 'just make sure I get a copy of it when you're done.'" Bruce Timm has stated Miller was enthusiastic about the portrayal of his work. "He called back three times to talk to me about it. He was just raving. Every phone message that he left was longer than the previous one. Dick Sprang was given a tape of the episode.

The first “Legend” was a huge homage to the 1950s silver age Batman stories. The Dick Sprang/Jerry Robinson era where they’d always fight villains on giant versions of things (giant pianos/instruments/typewriters etc) and Batman and Robin would always get trapped in death traps and would need to escape!

Michael Ironside is such a perfect Frank Miller Batman. I was very disappointed when they didn't cast him in the two animated movies based on TDKR but Weller did a great job in that as well. What I'd give to hear Ironside say the "I want you to remember" speech to Superman though.

1:57 no but this was how he looked when he made his comic debut, which is why I'm glad Brave and the Bold series went with this look to make it feel old school in modern times. In fact I think this short inspired the look for the Brave and the Bold series, but the silver age comics was the influence origin of course. 4:37 by the way, that's little Joel Schumacher, based on the director. It's more of a hated cameo than a positive one since the creators hated "Forever" and "Batman & Robin 97". The Dark Knight Returns has always been a huge influence between The Dark Knight Rises and Zack Syder's vision of Batman. Bat tank says it all.

When discussing the genesis of this story's concept, Bruce Timm stated it was inspired by his thoughts on Batman Forever. "I was just sitting around one day at home, and it just kinda came to me. I was thinking about how there's all these different versions of Batman, and they're all valid, but - The Adam West show all the way up to The Dark Knight and the movies, you may have a favorite version of your own, but they're all still Batman. You couldn't get any more different than The Dark Knight and Adam West. So I just came up with the idea that if we did an anthology that showed the different extremes, it would be a lot of fun and a challenge, and we just took it from there."

Back in the Golden Age, once the writers were told Batman couldn't go around machine-gunning monster-men or dispatching vampires anymore, they gave him Robin and started leaning "wacky." That's when fully-functional giant objects began appearing all over Gotham; giant musical instruments, giant typewriters, giant pennies, even giant guns. They've been parodied in every media iteration of Batman since (the '66 TV series did a few as death traps, including a giant advertisement coffee pot that poured real boiling liquid into a cup), but my favorite is the "early years" Batgirl story in which we learn Gotham City ultimately outlawed such displays due to supervillain abuse.
@ScreamingScallop

The framing story itself is based (ETA: as you guys looked up yourselves, whoopsie) on a '70s comic of the same title, in which Bruce Wayne takes some "less fortunate" Gotham kids on a camping trip and listens to their fanciful visions of the Dark Knight around the campfire. One kid imagines Bats as a super-tech Black man (one day this would inspire the character Batwing), another thinks he's a mashup of Man-Bat and Superman, a human bat who hunts criminals with x-ray vision and punches them through walls. Insanely, when the arguing brats turn to Bruce to ask what HE thinks, he leaps out of the shadows in full bat-costume (!) only for the kids to laugh him off and go to bed while Batman muses that his appearance only strikes fear in the hearts of criminals, not children.

The start of Brave and the Bold's artstyle and retro humor plus a loving tribute to The Dark Knight Returns with Michael Ironside as old Batman. Very unique episode, but there *is* one bit of media with a similar format- the first segment of Gotham Knight. Hope you watch that some day. What version of Batman would you have wanted for a 3rd story? Keep in mind it needs to be distinct and likely exaggerated.
