This was the first ever appearance of Harley Quinn. She was originally created specifically for this episode but was so popular she became a recurring character and was officially introduced into the comics shortly after.

9:44 - I love Charlie's speech to the Joker here: "This is how it ends, Joker. No big schemes. No grand fight to the finish with the Dark Knight. Tomorrow all the papers will say is that the great Joker who was found blown to bits in an alley alongside a miserable little nobody. Kinda funny, ironic really. See, I can destroy a man's dreams too, and that's really the only dream you've got, isn't it?"

Arleen Sorkin who voiced Harley Quinn in this series also voiced her in Arkham Asylum but she didn’t return for the rest of the games so in Arkham City, Arkham Knight and Arkham Origins Harley is voiced by Tara Strong who is her current voice! But Arleen Sorkin is the og and the best as Harley

As said previously, Harley Quinn is an original Batman the Animated Series. She is named after the voice actress, Arleen Sorkin. At the time, Harley was just supposed to be a female henchman, but due to a mix of popularity and story direction, Harley became a main villain and was implemented into the comics. She is one of a few original BTAS characters that were made for the series and then implemented into the comics. Harley Quinn is also derived from the Harlequin. They were basically used for slapstick humor character. The outfit Harley wears is loosely based on the hat and outfit the Harlequin would wear when performing (there are different variations of Harlequins based on the period the character was portrayed). Harley’s full name is Harleen Quinzel so you can see the connection of her name and Arleen Sorkin.

Harley's costume is also heavily inspired by an outfit Arleen wore on an episode of Days Of Our Lives, which served as the inspiration when Paul Dini came up with the character.

A couple of things to note: 1) The version of the Joker in The Dark Knight is mostly influenced by how the Joker has been portrayed in the comic books since the mid-2000's. The version of the character you see in the animated series takes elements from most of his comic book appearances up to the date it was created, with a lot of emphasis on his portrayal between the 1970's and early 90's. This means that his motivation isn't so much to specifically cause chaos like in more recent years, but to just do whatever he feels like. He sort of sees himself as a vaudeville stage performer/entertainer, with Gotham as his stage and Batman as his performing partner. 2) This version of the Joker does like money, he just considered Charlie's offer an insult because he sees himself as something more than just a common crook/robber. In his mind he's Gotham's greatest master criminal as well as its greatest entertainer. Taking petty cash out of some nobody's wallet is beneath him.

PSA on the dangers of road rage ('road disappointment'... I like that XD) that introduces two legendary characters in Harley and Charlie. Harley's talent speaks for itself, but Charlie is one of my favorite archetypes in this show- an ordinary family man who gets pulled into the twisted schemes of the rogues, but manages to stay brave and foil the plan at just the right moment. He even got a laugh out of Batman and made Joker beg for mercy!

Behold! The first appearance of Harley Quinn, ever. That’s right-this show created Harley Quinn, who was supposed to be a one off character. But she gained popularity with this one episode so the writers decided to bring her back and is now one of the most popular villains in DC.

The episode really captures a certain aspect of the Joker than IMO other incarnations fail to, especially the post-Ledger grounded versions. The Joker has this disarming buffoonery that makes him appear unthreatening and even likeable, and when paired with his volatile mood swings it's what makes him so dangerous.

Yeah Arleen Sorkin was the original voice for Harley Quinn and I believe she actually voiced Harley in the Arkham Asylum game. Arleen Sorkin was indeed the actor who played her in Arkham Asylum. She was also a good friend of the creators of this series; who were inspired by some of her other work. Conveniently enough, she also wasn't busy at the time and was able to perform as a character that was already based on her work anyway! No disrespect intended for Tara Strong, but her version of Harley's voice annoys me slightly. (Not that she's annoying, her Harley voice just sounds hard to listen to) Another innovation that this show made was also having all the actors in the same room during recording sessions, rather than recording everyone separately. It makes a difference!

Harley Quinn was created for this show btw, and while thos isn't her chronological start, this was the first ever episode to air with her, and she's blown up immensely in the lest 30 years, she's probably the most popular character created in the 90s, with Deadpool being the only real contention. Also something for you to look forward to along with us bruce Tim the creator of this batman animated show, announced a year or 2 ago that they were working on a show called batman caped crusader, which is meant to be a modern batman the animated series, allowing them to do certain story's they weren't allowed to do back in the 90s. Also there is a batman without the joker, incact multiple times in comics that's happened, but there is no joker without batman, joker basically gets depressed and unmotivated if he thinks batman truly dead, hell in one comic he became sane and got a job and girlfriend, only to go insane again when he found out batman lived

I'm sure you'll love The Last Laugh and Christmas With The Joker episodes, Mark Hamil outdid himself in those. There are plenty other good episodes with the Joker. while most are funny, Mad Love is pretty tragic. Trivia: - This episode marks the first appearance of Harley Quinn - Jokers thugs are reading... Tiny Toon Adventures. Many Batman: The Animated Series crew members, including Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Tom Ruegger and Andrea Romano, had previously worked on that series. - This episode is THE ONLY instance in the entire DCAU when Batman laughs,(at least from genuine amusement.) - Charlie's drivers license (before leaving Gotham) includes being located in the state of New York. - Charlies complaint of Meatloaf is a subtle injoke....His voice is provided by actor Ed Begly Jr. A vegetarian

The first game had the original voice actress. It was famous soap star Arleen Sorkin. She did all the cartoons. She stopped after the first game and then Tara Strong who does Batgirls voice in the animated series took over. Also Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are the voices I hear in my head when I read the comics. They have voiced these characters for 30 years. Kevin was the Batman. It’s so crazy to think that an iconic character like Harley Quinn didn’t first come from a comic book. She’s become so mainstream and integral to the comics, movies, and even DC as a whole that you would think she’s been around for years before this show but that’s not the case. It honestly just goes to show the creativity and ingenuity that was Batman The Animated Series. Definitely a show ahead of its time :)

"Joker doesn't want money" That's mainly Heath Ledger's version. Just check out S4 of TAS "The New Batman Adventures". The Joker goes through a bit of an arc where he's low on cash. You can't commit crime without the proper funding. Also, Charlie basically created the Bat-Signal. The bat-signal wouldn't officially show up until "The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy". You think this dynamic with Batman and the Joker is light? Oh ho ho, just wait until you see Batman Beyond. As for Harley's VA, Arleen Sorkin is the original. She's voiced her from the TAS to Arkham Asylum. After that, Tara Strong took over because Sorkin retired from acting.

The DCAU is the ten-year animated TV series, animated direct-to-DVD movie series, that spans Numerous titles and many series. Pre-dates the MCU by quite a while, as is usual. The X-Men copied the Doom Patrol and the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Avengers was formed because of the Justice League, the New Teen Titans copied the New Mutants, but usually it's Stan copying DC ideas. For things like Marvel's the Eternals and the Inhumans, Jack Kirby had done it all before for DC: New Genesis, Apokolips, Forever People, etc.

It encompasses The Superman animated series, Static Shock, The Zeta Project, Justice League animated series, Justice League Unlimited, Batman Beyond and a few other less well known series. You'll never regret watching it all (except maybe the Zeta project, but hey it's only relevant for a couple episodes so you can easily skip it.) but honestly, nothing, not even the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe tops the levels these series reach.
