I can confirm that Edison batteries are king for sure. We still use them in rr highway grade crossings today. I have a crossing that was installed in the late 70s that still have the original banks B12 and B14 using ED240s still trucking along. We currently buy SAFT batteries spl 250 and spl 340 and they seem to be ok so far, just wish we could still get the old school stuff.

Do you have experience with the chinese Nickel Iron Batteries? They are named as "TN XXX''. The XXX stands for the Ah, I found these batteries on different well known chinese selling plattforms like Aliexpress, Alibaba etc. These are the only supplier I have found so far that is availible here in germany...

1:30 - Comparing mobile phone lithium batteries to industrial/automotive batteries is not really a valid point. Despite their cost, mobiles are a "throw-away" item that are only designed to last the life of the battery, thus encouraging people to update their phone every couple of years or so. The phone batteries can then have a charging algorithm that allows charging between flat (

Big lithium batteries still are not as durable as FeNi. The reasons phones use lithum is A. the FeNi batteries are less energy dense and so are not portable and B. Phone companies as you have implied, don't care about durability

There about 3x the cost of AGMs - if your young you might search for some used Edison iron battery's on the net - The Chinese line are difficult to brake down and demoss ( scrub the plates clean) - the plates are not bolted there welded in place and the lids are sealed - My grand father was an early industrial mechanic/electrician from the early 1900s - so he had a lot of knowledge of battery technology - most power plants were hybrid in the late 1800s and early 1900s - Most power plants we're 110/220/600 volt DC power plants in the early day - some we're were 32/64 volt DC rail road ice houses and depots used those voltages - so some towns had 64 volts DC - Farm houses had farm light plants most were 32 volts DC - The iron battery worked out well for the rail road - they we're used on passenger cars for lights and fans - there was a generator on the rail wheels and as the passenger and mail cars traveled the tracks the battery charged - Iron battery's are good if effecincy does not matter - if you live in the south next to the gulf of Mexico - the humidity is always 60-90 % in that case the moister defuses the UV Ray's - so the UV Ray's does not strike solar panels directly - A solar panel will only generate 20% of it's out put 2 hrs a day if the sun is not blocked by clouds - Iron battery's can be completely discharged and over charged with out damaging them - The down side is they need an incredible amount of energy to charge - there very electrically inefficient - If you live in an area with good sun it might be the way to go if you have the money for extra panels - I'm 3rd or 4th generation Mechanic/Electrician also I spent decades in the offshore oilfields - we generate all our power - In many cases if your off grid your better off just using golf cart battery's - In the old power plants the battery's were often huge lead acid battery's 200000 amp cells - instead of using a specific gravity of 1.275 they used a specific gravity of 1.200 to 1.220 in the south or warmer climates and 1.240 in colder regions - In the 1900s fuel was about 20 cents a gallon with inflation that's $20 a gallon today - power was 30 cents a kw or today that is $30 a kw - so effecincy was important - a battery with a 1.220 gravity is not as electrically efficient as an AGM with 1.300 - But the 1.200 or 1.220 battery will out last the AGM by yrs and yrs - there is a 40% loss of capacity with weaker acid but you can add battery capacity in stationary use - the float voltage is lower in stand by service of those battery's - I live in a rural area in the south - up till 2000 the grid power stayed off more than it stayed on - I had 90 golf cart battery's for at least 40 yrs and many were old already - the gravity was 1.200 so there capacity was 40% of a 1.275 battery - at a lower gravity they don't sulfate much - It takes 3 times as much fuel to charge iron battery's so I don't use them - after Katrina it was several months till we had fuel delivery's - So with a hybrid I did fine sense I only had to run the gen once a week to charge -
