I did this change on a 2003 Honda Civic this past weekend. It took less than 2 hours. Bought it from Brenda at Greentec auto. Very easy to do without instructions. I just followed this video. One tip, there is a black plastic push-pin connector right near the on/off switch that you need to undo. Watch for a thin single orange wire, because it doesn't have a quick disconnection you actually have to unscrew it. Don't forget to disconnect your small battery under the hood before starting this.

Waiakalulu I got mine from Greentec as well. After finishing, do the ima lights and check engine light eventually reset themselves after driving a while? Or did you have to take it to a dealer to reset them?

fascinating (not) look at a mechanic unscrewing various things and then screwing them back in. Because there are no close ups I didn't learn a damn thing. And I think that was the point.
@HybridBattery
6 жыл бұрын
Dan, there are two electrical connections, a ground and a data cable plug. The whole point of the video is to learn where the various bolts are and how to maneuver the battery around. Also, you didn't read the first comment (from 2013), so I'll repost it for you: "This videos shows the process that is documented in the step-by-step HTML instructions. It is not meant to be a replacement for those instructions." So yeah, that was the point -the (free) HTML instructions are nothing but close ups so you can "learn a damn thing".

Ron, or anyone I need help! My 2004 civic hybrid is a 5 speed manual. It takes about 4-5 tries to turn the car. And for it to be turned on, I will have to turn the ignition and hold it until it turns on. Sometimes it takes 5 seconds or even up to 15 seconds. Also, the auto stop rarely works anymore and even if it does, when I put the car in gear to start moving, it takes a few seconds for the engine to turn back on from auto stop mode....There’s no IMA light on...I don’t know the problem. Should I just change the battery?
@HybridBattery
6 жыл бұрын
Tony Nguyen, first, let’s do some diagnostics. Start by getting your OBD-II codes read. It’s very likely that there is a code in there that is IMA related, but not severe enough to warrant an IMA light. (Possibly a commutation sensor issue). Since the battery is so expensive, I think it’s worth checking. It might even be an issue with the clutch sensor, as the car won’t go into auto-stop unless the clutch is depressed and won’t restart if the car is put into gear without it pressed. If the sensor is flakey, it might delay things. I assume that when you hold the ignition, it is not cranking the starter. Start with the codes and reply back here.

Thank you for your comments, but this was filmed as a tutorial for people who had purchased a new or refurbished battery, so the battery was fully charged before shipping and does not need to be charged. There is a note to disconnect the 12V battery before starting the job. His pants are clean, so he does not need to remove the lower seat, but feel free to do so if you wish. His tools are clean and dry, so they will not stain the seat. These tools were never used for anything but batteries, so they have never been exposed to grease. At 2:15 he turns off the battery's circuit breaker. At 11:57 he turns it back on. Lastly, the fact that he tossed a pair of pliers onto the floor of the car is not a valid criticism. It's his problem if he does it.

Juan Lopez I assume your IMA light is on and your 12v battery (under the hood) is there and in good shape. Your car is not charging your 12V battery. This is generally due to a very poor condition hybrid battery, but it may also be bad battery cables or grounds. Charge your under hood battery. Then if it can start the car, your hybrid battery is the problem. If it can’t start the car, then check your battery cables and grounds. If it is the hybrid battery, then you need to replace the hybrid battery or bypass it.
@juancarloslopez8919

Then there is an excellent chance that either your 12v battery is bad or the cables are. The ground (black) cables tend to rot out and leave you with a poor ground. This can keep the car from charging your battery. A telltale symptom is a rapid clicking sound when you turn the key.
@HybridBattery

Also, your ima light should illuminate for a second when you turn the key on as a bulb check. If it doesn’t, then someone may have disabled it.

Hi Ron, hi everyone, I need your help on my Honda Civic 2007. I have constantly the battery, IMA and the engine lit on the dashboard, and the battery level get stuck at 2 barres. Very heavy steering sometimes I got the steering wheel blocked. It happened also that the car doesn’t start at all. I noticed that when I jump the battery, all the light disappears from the dashboard and the battery start recharging and assisting for a couples of hours/days then again, I have the same issue. I tried with a fully charged battery and replaced it, but it did not solve the issue. Would you think that the issue is the IMA battery? As a desperate solution, would the car run if I switch off the IIMA battery and rely on petrol only? Many thanks,

I have been hearing $4,000 to replace the hybrid battery from people who bought hybrid cars at work. This is quite a savings if it can be done for only $2,000. There is a risk though. You could be shocked and if you touch a wire on something you shouldn't you could blow other components of the car. That being said, I just bought my first hybrid car last week. It's the 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid. I'm hoping by the time I need a new battery that they will be less expensive and just as easy to replace. Thanks for the video.

hi, I want to find out in a Civic FD3 MX 2008 model when replacing the battery do you have to update the software or install a update to the car. As I got to know the new battery comes with a new technology (how the battery is made) compared to the batters that was made back in 2008 and that requires a update in the car.
@HybridBattery
8 жыл бұрын
Honda changed battery manufacturers around 2010 or so. The new company's cells are slightly different, so they wrote new software to match them. Do you NEED to update? No. If you are getting a used pack, you won't know which version it is, if you're getting an aftermarket pack, whatever software is in there will work. But if you're getting a pack from Honda, let them install the correct version. The update is a simple flashing - no hardware is changed and it comes free with a Honda battery. If you don't get the battery from Honda, don't pay to have them update it. You don't need it.

I m in Sri Lanka and heat, humidity and the dust in the environment are higher than Japan (this car is design to use in Japan) and when the traffic conditions are different with that the usage of the battery differs from the original designed country. +Shashika fernando It is also used in the US which ranges from sub-Arctic to Equatorial desert climates with every temperature and humidity in between. By 2004 or so they had worked out most of the temperature kinks. Make sure your rear dash (intake) and trunk area (exhaust) are kept clear so that the battery's fan can provide adequate ventilation and you should be fine. There are no modifications that I'm aware of.

1st gen IMA batt and 2nd gen aren't likely going to work. Would not be direct fit and the specs are not similar enough (computer may not like voltage and amperage readings, causing unreliable/unuseable IMA): 1st gen: 144Volts and 6Ah 2nd gen: 158 Volts and 5.5Ah On top of that, you also have some variance within 2nd gen model years. Below is from a forum I stumbled across recently, OP does still respond to questions. The folks at Bumblebee Battery also confirmed this info: 03-05 HCH1 sticks are only compatible with 03-05 HCH1 (and G1 insight, sorta) 06-08 HCH2 subpacks (welded dual sticks) are only compatible with 06-08 HCH2 subpacks 09-11 HCH2 subpacks (welded dual sticks) are only compatible with 09-11 HCH2 subpacks Hope this helps. +Education you will have to keep an eye on the 12v battery. It *may* not charge the 12v at idle. If the alternator light lights up, then the revs are not high enough. Also AC will probably not work. Honda Insight manages this very well, but not the civic. Running a civic without a battery should be considered a temporary measure.
