I sold and installed car batteries for 5 years. Only group sizes that have INTERNAL placement will have these vents. Lots of modern cars and box trucks have batteries either inside the trunk, under the driver/passenger seat or in the floor behind passenger seats. Cars that have internal batteries will use battery group sizes that will come with those vents because if the battery starts venting or overheating, you don't want those (pungent) fumes venting into your cabin. If you ever smell rotten eggs coming from your battery, disconnect it and if you can, move it somewhere safe where it won't hurt anyone or cause a fire. Just wait for it to cool down and take it to an auto parts store for free disposal or use it for a core to get a new battery. That being said, not all brands may actually supply a plug on a terminal cap, or it can fall off the battery in shipping. Check the old battery and re-use if it has one or just use a dab of RTV over the hole and let it seal up.

By sticking a cord in her lighter plug and it came up on their computer within an instant. It took them 2 minutes to unscrew the old sensor and put the new one in. Also if you get a car with a warranty and sell it later, expect to get telemarketing calls for the next 10 years wanting you to renu your warranty through them even though you don't own it anymore. For those wondering, typically the only time you need to connect a vent tube to the battery and cap the other end are when the battery is inside the passenger compartment in a vehicle (typically in trunk area on European cars, but sometimes also under floor board or seats in cars as well). This is because the battery gases and fumes are toxic, so you don’t want it venting inside the car where you’re breathing in toxic fumes.

This is not a "most mechanics should know this" situation. This is specific to mostly only European rear engine &/or battery in the trunk vehicles. Rarely do American or Japanese vehicles require this. It happens sometimes when they use batteries from other companies that aren't the norm (think sport or super cars) but this is nowhere near common. That would be like saying "all mechanics should know how to do a points replacement" during tune ups and maintenance. The chances of you seeing a vehicle with them unless you work on classics for a living is negligible. The amount of pressure in a standard lead acid battery isn't near enough to require a dedicated breather and Glass Mat batteries are no longer in common use.
@Gottenhimfella
2 жыл бұрын
Mechanics should know that lead acid batteries, under certain circumstances, can produce a lot of hydrogen. These days, mechanics "need" only to know how to remove and replace components until the problem goes away, but there should be another word for the current role, like "swapologist", because good mechanics formerly needed to be widely knowledgeable and highly logical in carrying out their diagnostic analysis.

@EeekItsSnek

@@Gottenhimfella though I agree with your sentiment, I still think the battery plug scenario is not only unnecessary in many applications but uncommon in the vast majority of them. The ones that need breathers or vents in one direction or another will have them when necessary. Others get enough ventilation through the electrolyte cap. But again most don't need it. Also the swap instead of fix issue isn't all about good or bad technicians. Often it's about planned obsolescence or lack of parts available making replacement less expensive and more feasible. Not saying I like that the industry is going that direction but that's a fact we all have to live with. Folks who just throw parts at a car without any diag aren't who were talking about. Those folks aren't mechanics or technicians.

You’re right about everything except the gas leaving the battery isn’t just pressure or vacuum caused by heat. When batteries are charging or extremely low in life the acid that has expelled it’s energy turns to water and when it charges hydrogen and oxygen atoms are released from those vents. That’s why batteries on chargers can explode.

I understand what he’s saying but plugging one side and having a vent in the other wouldn’t work like that. There’s two different chemical compounds inside the battery and they are sealed from one another in the middle. Plugging one side would mean that side can’t vent.
@patriotfox7192
2 жыл бұрын
There aren’t two different chemical compounds in a battery. Their is one liquid, gel or mat glass solution (light sulphuric acid). There are 6 cells with positive and negative metal plates. The metal plates are different and they pass electrons back and forth as they charge and discharge. Changing the one solution from more acidic to less acidic (water).
