Hi everyone, I hope you enjoy this video - it ended up being something I was researching privately - so I thought I'd share my research. You could also power the new Model:Samples using a USB to DC converter - as USB is 5V! The battery unit can be found in Australia at OfficeWorks via this link: www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/comsol-20000mah-laptop-powerbank-black-colp200

A few points on some of the specs: The Octatrack rear panel shows 12V@2A, and the supplied power brick matches that. However, often the average requirement is half of the rear-panel spec or less. As we see at 3:40, the power bank meter shows a power consumption of 7 to 8 watts, or current I = P/V = 8/12 = 0.67A. So about 1/3 of the max spec of 2A. We do need the power bank to be capable of the specified maximum, perhaps during initial power-up, but it's that lower average value that would allow us to judge how long it can run on a single charge. The "20,000mAh" (20Ah) spec might shed light on how long the power bank will run the equipment, but no voltage is given, so we don't know how much energy this represents. One thing we cannot do is to happily assume this means 2A for 10 hours, or 0.67A for 30 hours, for the 12V output used here. But there's another spec which shows what we need to know: the "Watt Hour Rating": 73Wh. Given that we already know the average power draw is about 8W, then the battery pack should last for 73/8 = 9 hours. But the power pack's electronics probably has an efficiency of only 85-90%, so make that around 8 hours. As a side light, we can use that 73Wh spec to derive the voltage that pertains to the 20Ah rating: V = (P * t)/(I * t) = 73/20 = 3.65V, slightly below the nominal voltage of a single lithium cell. So the 20Ah rating is a red herring, since there is no raw battery output from this unit. One suspects that the 20,000mAh rating is on there just to sound like a big number for marketing purposes. At the desired 12V output, the mAh rating would be 20 * 3.65/12 = 6Ah, and more like 5 to 5.4Ah, factoring in the efficiency of the electronics (which we now know to be a boost converter, since the battery voltage is lower than all the output voltages). And no surprise, at the current calculated above, 0.67A, we can run the equipment for, say 5.4 /0.67 = 8 hours, as previously calculated. As to the maximum current output, the relevant spec (2:48) is "Laptop output [power, at] DC 12-24V: 65W Max". Current I = 65/12 = 5.4A max, and it's not clear whether this rating factors in the boost converter efficiency or not. Regardless, this spec tells us that this power pack can easily satisfy the Analog Four's 2.5A requirement. For what it's worth, the USB output spec of 12V 2A is rather odd, since it doesn't appear to fit any of the standard USB power output profiles or rules. At any rate, it doesn't reflect the capabilities of the "laptop" output.

Some good points there! Maybe I need to do a teardown? I'd like to see what voltage regulators they used, and general power protection. At this stage A$138 power pack teardown - hmmm not sure I want to blow that kinda money - as it is likely a sealed unit. Only putting the Octatrack through hours of playing will truly test the battery life - and whilst I haven't done this. The demo mode play that I tried didn't chew anymore than 7.8W. My "guestimate" in the video of it lasting 8 hours is probably around the mark - but it still is only a guestimate at this stage. Nonetheless - I think it is a really good solution.

Good little intro to power bricks - 1o1 ! Thanx to both you guys ! - in aussie dollars -138$ ,thats - as april 2019 - ca. 98 usd. not an intirely cheapo solution - but anything over 6 hours , is , in my world , pretty decent for that kind of money - im in,- :-)

How do you set the output voltage of this power pack? It looks like the non-USB DC output that you're using is the one that can give you a range of output voltages for different laptops, from 12V to 24V, so I'd want to make sure it's set to 12V before plugging it into the equipment.
@ranzee

Hey Graham! Yes, you certainly can change the output voltage of the DC. You hold down the power button until the votage flashes - and then you toggle it and it gives you these settings: 12, 16.5, 19, 20 and 24V :) Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, it is really appreciated :)

@@ranzee Hmmm, I'd be a bit wary of accidentally setting the wrong voltage! Hopefully it at least defaults to the lowest of those settings, and once set to 12V, continues to use that on subsequent power ups?

You have to hold it down for a while before it changes. Plus it shows you on the screen. Shouldn't be an issue. But they could have put a switch on there.

Has anyone found a similar solution that is available in the USA? I know of myvolts but I prefer to get something like the Comsol shown in the video because of the simple connection and no additional adapter needed, aside from the output plug of course. It just seems a lot cleaner. Also, it will be nice to be able to switch voltage if I need to power some other device. Also, I'm just looking to power a Digitakt for now but considering a cross-grade over to the Analog 4mkii, and that is something I would really like to take to go to work on sound design and programming full songs.

Have you put the specs of the Comsol into Amazon and see what it turns up? I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a rebranded OEM solution from China.
