RUMINATIONS: Hoo boy, some of my comments in this episode are a wee bit wince-inducing thanks to more recent events in American history. I’d like to think that, at the very least, the circumstances are different and I couldn’t have foreseen the kind of crap going on these days. Still, my other points about the story still stand - the contrivances, the plot holes, the weak characterization, the utter pointlessness of the entire story… it’s just baffling in its stupidity.
Over on the storyline side of things, you’re probably wondering why Harvey is looking from left to right as he’s ranting to Linkara at the start of it. Well, the thing is that originally, this shot was supposed to feature Linkara walking in front of the camera back and forth as he started preparing supplies for his journey. However, the composite shot’s focus altered and, as a result, I couldn’t create a proper mask around Linkara while he walked that would be convincing. Otherwise, Linkara carrying around the Liberator gun was a bit that got dropped for two reasons: one, a brief subplot in the storyline ended up getting cut due to time and really no need for it to exist… and two, the prop broke. In the 300th episode, you see a slightly more revised version of it. The problem with it is that I used a transparent toilet plunger handle for its construction and that thing was heavy as hell and difficult to cut through (mainly thanks to being solid plastic). As such, even with stabilization inside of the barrel, the thing just didn’t work like it was supposed to. The cybermat, too, was part of the subplot that just didn’t go anywhere. Although another problem there was that the remote control for it just was too stubborn, at one point stopping altogether. It’s really the problem of trying to do RC with a small car on carpet - it’s just too rough for a smaller RC car to run on unless the tires are really good.
An idea I toyed with but didn’t end up happening, as was brought up, was Linkara meeting with Malachite in the coffee shop he ended up trapped in after Suburban Knights (as explained on the Suburban Knights DVD). Linkara would have met with him, talked, but ultimately learn nothing. That’s pretty much why it was dropped. It would have been fun for the fans to see Malachite again, but it’s a 6-hour drive from Minnesota to that café, so six hours there, six hours back, and all for a cameo that didn’t need to happen.
