Jesus, they must've spent half the effects budget on this scene alone. That's a whole lot of explosives and models getting wrecked, and some actual buildings too.

The hangar that gets blown up is at / was at the Imperial War Museum Duxford. Apparently the film crew didn’t ask the Ministry of Defence first!

The shots starting at 03:10 are one of the most beautifully cinematic depictions of the "heroic few against all odds" that I have ever seen in a film.

Imagine seeing this film when it first came out, this whole movie still blows me away with its realism in 2023

I agree. Imagine being one of the veterans who were there seeing it. The memories it must have brought back.

I’ve read that the first 1:30 was filmed at what is now the Imperial War Museum Duxford. To quote Wikipedia… “On 21 June and 22 June, one of the original World War I hangars was blown up in stages for the filming (without the concurrence of the Ministry of Defence) and the airfield was spectacularly filmed from the air in a realistic bombing sequence. Ironically this was the nearest [RAF Duxford] came to being destroyed as no significant wartime German raids were carried out on the aerodrome. The French château, seen at the beginning of the film, was constructed on the south-west corner of the airfield.

Recommend Leonard Mosley's book. Great behind the scenes stuff.

Those bombs going off look small, but the shrapnel kill zone was larger anyone with in 50-75 yards were hit.

Later, in the Blitz, the Germans had to develop larger bombs

2:05 Throws his parachute into the cockpit and then climbs in after it. A Spitfire cockpit is too small for that; you put the parachute on outside and **then** you get into the cockpit. And then the fighters get airborne and fly off into the distance, instead of getting stuck into the aircraft bombing their airfield.
